Transcendentalism Project

TRANSCENDENTALISM PROJECT For this project, you will create a Transcendentalism Book that showcases: 1. your knowledge of each of the four main principles of Transcendentalism 2. your ability to locate and analyze aphorisms 3. your connections between the aphorisms you choose and the four principles

Directions: For each of the four Transcendentalist principles (To Thine Own self Be True, Au Natural, “Fight” for Your Rights, and Welcome to the Dark Side) you will create a page for the book. Each page should consist of: 1. the principle labeled at the top of the page 2. the aphorism (for pg. 4, you will select an allegorical quote) that you think most connects to the principle (with parenthetical documentation or PD) 3. a visual that symbolically represents or provides insight as to the aphorism’s (p. 4- quote) message or meaning (note: simply drawing a tree for Au Natural will not suffice… go deeper!) 4. a five to seven sentence, academic (follow academic writing rules) paragraph that explains how the visual represents the aphorism (p. 4- alleg. quote) AND how the aphorism (p. 4- alleg. quote) addresses the Transendentalist principle for this page 5. All of the above must fit on one side of one page… no lined paper!

The final page of the book will be a reflective page. On this page you will write two paragraphs: Paragraph 1- 1. Choose one of the Transcendentalism principles that you feel most relates to you/your life. 2. Write a five to seven sentence, reflective paragraph (can use “I” here!) that explains why you chose this principle. Be sure to provide specific examples from your life that help to support why this principle connects to you personally. Paragraph 2- 3. Create your own personal principle. Write this principle in the form of an aphorism. 4. Write a five to seven sentence, reflective paragraph (can use “I” here!) that explains why this principle is important to you. Be sure to provide specific examples from your life that help to support why this principle connects to you personally. 5. All of the above must fit on one side of one page… no lined paper!

For the cover/title page of the book, follow the template on the attached page. You will need to create an original, appropriate title for a Transcendentalism book.
