Pauline Giroud – Strasbourg About a Boy and bullying

Scene 1 (chap 1 - 5:306:30) Watch the extract and say everything you can! The scene takes place in the street. Marcus and his mother are walking to school. He must be about 13 years old but his mother still walks him to school. When she’s about to leave him she tells him she loves him, and then the other pupils make fun of him, they laugh at him. He seems ashamed, embarrassed, ill-at-ease. The other kids bully him because he stands out, he’s different.

Prompts: What does Marcus’s mother says to him? She says she loves him What’s Marcus’s reaction? (look at his face) Why?  He looks embarrassed. he knows that he’s going to look ridiculous/stupid and that the other pupils are going to make fun of him/laugh at him. What’s the other kids’ reaction?  they start laughing and imitating his mother in a mocking way. Everybody’s looking at him. Why do you think the other pupils make fun of him? his mother takes him to school (whereas he’s old enough to go by himself) his mum says she loves him in front of everybody  he is strangely dressed. He looks different, he’s standing out

Scene 2 (chap 3 – 11:3012:50) Part 1 (in the classroom) Where is the scene set? Problem? Characters’ reaction? The scene is set in a classroom. At one point we can hear Marcus singing aloud, so the whole class starts laughing and the teacher makes a joke of the situation.

Part 2 (on the playground) (sans le son, puis avec le son) Watch and react! Marcus is now on the playground and people are still laughing at him. He joins two boys who seem to be his friends. They are apart from the other pupils, just like him. A boy starts shooting a ball at the three of them. The two boys look embarrassed by Marcus’ presence and tell him that they don’t want him to come to speak to them anymore because then, the other kids bully them too. Marcus then leaves, looking really sad and disappointed. At the end we can see that he’s going to be hit in the head by a foot ball.
