Catalog Description: This practicum is designed to allow students to spend a semester in an appropriate classroom setting(s) working with a cooperating teacher(s). The student and cooperating teacher, with the approval of the university supervisor, will devise a plan for the student teacher to assume full responsibility for the classroom(s) for a designated period of time during the semester.

Prerequisite(s): CI 454E, CI 412E, CESP 433 Introduction to Learning and Evaluation; concurrent enrollment in CI 456.

Student Teaching placement begins on January 20, 2009 and lasts until May 8, 2009.

Grading: See the Student Teaching Handbook for comments in this area. These additional comments are appropriate. To earn an "A" in student teaching the following should occur. (1) After the mid-term break, classroom observation forms completed by the cooperating teacher and university supervisor should demonstrate competence at the predominately exemplary or satisfactory level. (2) The daily, hand-written, reflective journal entries should demonstrate a clear understanding of the professional, instructional and managerial processes as well as a reflective capability. 471J 5

Academic Honesty: A standard of honesty, fairly applied to all students, is essential to a learning environment. Students abridging a standard of honesty must accept the consequences; penalties are assessed by appropriate classroom instructors or other designated people. Serious cases may result in discipline at the college or University level and may result in suspension or dismissal. Tentative Course Schedule: To be developed with administrators of participating schools, cooperating teachers, and university instructor.

Educational Materials Resource: Book fine policies are in effect for any materials checked out for this class from the Library Resource Center (LRC) at the Joyce Focht Instructional Support Center (USD 259), 412 S. Main, Wichita. All materials for this class must be returned and fines paid at the LRC by this semester's Study Day before grades for this class will be recorded. NOTE: At the time of check out at the LRC, you will be asked to give your name, social security number, and identify the appropriate WSU class and instructor's name.

Performance Assessment: Both the state of Kansas and national accreditation organizations require that university programs for the preparation of teachers and other school personnel be performance-based. In particular, this requires that program candidates meet criteria established for each of at least four Transition Points. Transition Point requirements may include passing various specific courses and obtaining certain GPAs as well as receiving satisfactory ratings on certain required assessments some of which are embedded within program coursework.

One such assessment required for all professional education field experiences is WSU Teacher Education Field Experience Dispositions. At a minimum, this rubric is to be completed by the public school supervisor at the conclusion of a semester for each student. The proficiency required of candidates is a 3 or higher in each area of the rubric. 471J 6

Additional required assessments occur in this course. A title/description of any assessments and associated rubrics and passing criteria follows: Cooperating Teacher Student Teaching Final Evaluation Form (Mid-term and Final) with all statements marked at 3 or higher. Student Teacher Self-Reflection Tool (Mid-term and Final with all statements marked at 3 or higher. University Supervisor Student Teaching Feedback Form (Mid-term and Final with all statements marked at 3 or higher.

Information on program Transition Point requirements can be found in the program handbook. Candidates unable to successfully meet Transition Point criteria will ordinarily be assigned remediation, which may affect progress in the program (e.g., not proceeding to next semester’s coursework). Meeting Transition Point criteria ultimately is necessary to secure licensure recommendation or graduation even though general GPA requirements may be met.

Format of Written Work: The faculty of the College of Education has chosen the style guide of the American Psychological Association as the manual to be followed when submitting written work. It is the responsibility of the student to follow the guidelines set forth in this manual. If questions arise, please refer to the manual FIRST, and then to the COE WEB site; the instructor should be consulted ONLY after all references. Specific assignments may offer some suggestions for APA format.

Course Focus: This course will focus on three primary issues in the teaching of secondary social studies in today's schools: the relationship among the various social sciences (interdisciplinary approach) the need to reach every learner in the school population (diversity) the need to acknowledge the global perspective of today's world (technology) These issues should be examined, addressed, and assessed in every course assignment.

Course Requirements:

Hand-Written Reflective Journal. Entries should be made at a minimum of twice a week during the period that you are in the schools. Concentrate on insights that will enable you to successfully complete the course objectives of the student teaching experience. The journal should be written in a spiral, lined notebook. Each entry should be dated. Your primary concern is reflective thought; do not worry about mechanics or spelling.

When the assignment in the school is completed, you are to write a brief analysis of the content of the journal. Attach the analysis to the front of the journal. (100 points)

Evaluation Forms. All mid-term and final evaluation forms required of Student Teachers, Cooperating Teachers, and University Supervisors must be submitted via STEPS. 471J 7
