ESSEX COUNTY EXECUTIVE DIVINCENZO CONGRATULATES ARTISTS
IN ANNUAL ESSEX COUNTY SENIOR CITIZENS JURIED ART SHOW
30 Senior Citizens Receive Recognition for Their Artistic Talent
Roseland, NJ – Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. congratulated 30 Essex County artists who received awards in the Annual Essex County Senior Citizens Juried Art Show. There were 94 pieces of artwork entered in this year’s contest. The artists were recognized during an awards ceremony on Wednesday, August 18th at the Essex County Hospital Center in Cedar Grove.
“I congratulate the winners and all the artists who participated in this year’s Senior Art Show. The talent displayed by our senior artists is truly amazing and the artwork is inspiring,” DiVincenzo said. “Essex County has a thriving fine arts community and our Senior Art Show enables our older residents, both professionals and non-professionals, to display their original creations where the public can see them. This is an excellent event for us to promote the arts and inspire our residents to use their talents,” he added.
“I am delighted to see such great artwork created by our senior residents,” Freeholder Patricia Sebold said. “This is such a wonderful program that keeps our senior citizens active and involved in the community,” she added.
Artists, and the awards they received, are as follows:
Bloomfield
Patrick Fox won first place in the non-professional digital imagery category for “Lynne.”
Caldwell Robert Kaplan received an honorable mention in the non-professional photography category for “Mother and Child, ChiChi Castenango, Guatemala.”
Cedar Grove
Frances Hall won second place in the professional watercolor painting category for “Beyond the Bridge.” Jane Ballinger won first place in the non-professional mixed media category for “Abstract I.” Nancy Zeim won second place in the non-professional watercolor painting category for “Still Life.”
Essex Fells
Marion Franks won first place in the non-professional watercolor painting category for “The Twins (Raspberry).”
Fairfield
Marian Jones received an honorable mention in the non-professional watercolor painting category for “Mr. Fairfax.”
Irvington
Irene Spatz won second place in the non-professional drawing category for “St. Mary’s Thistle.”
Livingston
Laurence Agron won first place in the professional photography category for “St. Peter’s Interior.” Harriet Hiller won first place in the professional oil painting category for “The Knitter.” Sheila Writt won first place in the non-professional pastel painting category for “Little Egg Harbor.” Sherrill Silver won second place in the non-professional photography category for “Bicycle in Shadows.” Angela Wang won second place in the non-professional oil painting category for “Wine Glasses.”
Montclair
Nancy-Jo Taiani received an honorable mention in the professional watercolor painting category for “Homage to the Sun.”
North Caldwell
Carmel Bongiovanni won first place in the professional mixed media category for “Red Horizontal Oval #6.” Phyllis Huggett won second place in the professional mixed media category for “My Grandmother’s House.”
Roseland
Joseph Mango won second place in the non-professional acrylic painting category for “Tuscany.”
Short Hills
Wen-Hsien Wu received an honorable mention in the non-professional acrylic painting category for “Quebec City.”
South Orange
Sheila Sugarman won first place in the professional pastel painting category for “South Mountain Autumn.” Edward Hoffner won first place in non-professional acrylic painting category for “Fences.”
Verona
Kay Luzzi won first place in the professional acrylic painting category for “1787 Chateau Lafite.” Bill Wood won first place in the professional print category for “Egret.” Ronnie Horn won first place in the non-professional category for “Breakfast with Pop.”
West Caldwell
Sandy Grossman won second place in the non-professional pastel painting category for “Reflections.” She also received an honorable mention in the non-professional pastel painting category for “Spring.” Wil Nelson received an honorable mention in the non-professional oil painting category for “New Hope.”
West Orange Bert Shapiro won first place in the professional watercolor painting category for “Golden Greeting.” Louis Giordano won first place in the non-professional drawing category for “Just Whistle.” Howard Knauer won first place in the non-professional photography category for “I Don’t Share.” Evelyn Giventer received an honorable mention in the professional craft category for “Holiday Origami.” Seema Tepper received an honorable mention in the non-professional mixed media category for “DreamScape.”
The Essex County Senior Citizens Juried Art Show will be on display as follows:
Date: Wednesday, August 18th to Thursday, September 16th
Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. & 4 to 7 p.m.

Artists who received first place awards are eligible to have their artwork entered into the New Jersey State Senior Citizens Art Show, which will be from September 27th to October 28th in East Windsor. The Essex County Senior Art Show and Exhibit was open to all professional and non-professional artists ages 60 and older. Art work was judged on originality, composition, style, and quality and creativity.
The Essex County Park System was created in 1895 and is the first county park system established in the United States. The Park System consists of more than 6,000 acres and has 20 parks, five reservations, an environmental center, a zoo, ice skating rink, roller skating rink, three public golf courses, golf driving range, three off-leash dog facilities, a castle and the Presby Iris Memorial Gardens.
