Pre-Algebra - Connected Mathematics 3

Goal All students should be able to reason and communicate proficiently in mathematics. They should have knowledge of and skill in the use of the vocabulary, forms of representation, materials, tools, techniques, and intellectual methods of the discipline of mathematics, including the ability to define and solve problems with reason, insight, inventiveness, and technical proficiency.

Evaluation Homework is a vital part of this class. It will normally be given a few times each week, but I will try to limit homework on Fridays. However, there will be certain times when students have Pre Algebra homework over the weekend.

The grading scale used is consistent with Seneca Valley School District policy: A=100%-90%; B=89%-80%; C=79%-70%; D=69%-60%; F=59%-0%

Homework/Participation Policy Students are expected to earn 1 point each day as part of their homework/participation grade. Homework is for practice and reinforcement of what was just taught. The policy for homework is as follows: more is not better; it’s about the quality, not necessarily the quantity. A few bonus points may be earned sparingly from time to time, but no “extra credit” points can be earned for assignments or projects. Grades are to accurately reflect a student’s ability level and level of mastery of Pre Algebra concepts. Homework, quizzes, and tests will comprise a grade for this class every nine weeks. You may check SV GradeBook at you leisure to see up-to-date point values and earned points.

1 point – Full credit: Homework is completed and on-time and student actively participated in class that day. 0 points – No Credit: Homework is incomplete or forgotten for the day, unless it is extended.

FYI

 Students must maintain classwork and homework in a three-ring binder. We will periodically empty out the binders to help with organization. Students must record daily homework in their planners before leaving class.

 TenMarks will be used to reinforce class work with engaging, custom assignments that meet each student’s needs. The self-paced assignments provide instant interventions (targeted instruction) in areas of need, and assignment results also provide me with recommendations for remediation/enrichment for each student. Embedded hints and videos are available for students as they work on their assignments. As an incentive, points are earned within TenMarks that may be redeemed for game time in the TenMarket. Completion of assignments may be counted toward a class grade at times.

 Students will record mathematical reflections within their math journals at the end of each investigation, and these will be worth a total of 5 points each.

 Connected Mathematics was developed with the belief that calculators should be available to students, and that students should know when and how to use them.

 Digital math tools, such as Number Lines, Data and Graphs, Coordinate Grapher, and 3D geometry are available via a menu on Student Place.

 Students must maintain a B average or above throughout the Pre-Algebra class to be recommended for Honors Algebra I in seventh grade. I will not recommend a student who does not maintain this average.

 If you know ahead of time that you will be missing a certain number of days due to an educational trip, please let me know so that I can get material to you before you leave. As stated in the student handbook: “anytime a student misses school it is his/her responsibility to obtain all class work prior to departure. It is also understood that all work will be due the day that he/she returns to school.”

 It is YOUR responsibility to see me if you don’t understand something you missed. I am available most mornings from 8-8:30.
