Sixth Grade Honors English Outline

L. Axelson Rm 28 SIXTH GRADE HONORS ENGLISH OUTLINE

Welcome to Millikan 6th Grade Honors English! These next 9 months will be packed with creative English lessons. We will be reading, discussing, and analyzing literature. A literature-based program will be used to teach reading, vocabulary, and writing skills. Students will be prompted to think with depth and complexity regarding their assignments and to provide evidence from the text to support their assertions while using Common Core strategies.

Objective Students will learn to critically evaluate literature, understand vocabulary, and develop a strong writing structure and inspire an interest in reading.

Reading/Reading Record Card Students will keep a reading record card to show the number of pages read each semester. MUST REACH 600 PAGES BY DEC 2016! Will start a new card JAN 2017 for 800 more pages. Book Reports Students will be responsible for a book report written IN CLASS each month. MUST BE A BOOK FROM THE LIST PROVIDED BY MRS. AXELSON! Vocabulary Every Monday students will receive 10 new vocabulary words and every Monday night students will be creative with 5-10 of these words. Students will be assigned a specific task to help them remember the definitions. Every Tuesday students will pick 3-5 words for a vocabulary poem (poetic vocabulary). There will be a test on these words every other Friday.

READERS/WRITERS NOTEBOOK There will be quick and easy in class writing assignments written in these books. Students will learn grammar skills, literary devices and just fun writing to help cultivate their skills. Writing Students will write responses to literature, paragraphs, letters, short stories, poetry, editorials, essays, and journal entries. Every Wednesday night students will either write a story, an essay, a book bond or be reminded to READ their book report book. Portfolio Students will create a portfolio each semester to use to show off, access and improve on their work. HOMEWORK There will be written homework every night Monday-Wednesday! Thursday nights are reserved for studying for tests. Students will receive a monthly homework sheet. It consists of writing essays, poems, short stories, sentences, letters, and book bonds. Students should always review their work each night and not just wait until the night before a test to study.

GRADES A point system will be used. EVERYTHING COUNTS! (homework, class work, tests, book reports, journals, reading record cards, projects and writing assignments.) Although work can be turned in early, LATE WORK MAY RECEIVE ½ OR NO CREDIT! Any questions regarding grades, assignments, or just thoughts you feel a need to share can be done so by email.
