1 Toward the end of each spring semester, you may include both summer and fall courses you plan to take, so that we can clear your holds for both terms. 2 Form and Theory courses are not required of students enrolled in the original pre-Spring 2009 curriculum, but we highly recommend that you take these courses to prepare for more advanced coursework by strengthening your background in narrative theory, poetics, forms and techniques. If you prefer to stay with the original pre-Spring 2009 curriculum, don’t fill in the nine hours of Form and Theory courses; simply add an additional nine hours to Workshop, Studies in Form or Variable Topics courses. 3 Form and Theory courses are required under the following conditions: 1. Students must take a minimum of two Form and Theory Courses within their first nine hours of course work. 2. They must finish all three of their Form and Theory courses within their first eighteen hours of coursework. 3. They may take two Form and Theory courses concurrently, with their advisor’s approval. 4. They may take Form and Theory courses concurrently with Workshops, Studies in Form or Variable Topics courses, with their advisor’s approval. 5. After their first 18 hours of course work, students will undergo a first-year review, and faculty will assess the students’ progress and decide whether students may finish their coursework and complete their degrees. 4 No more than three workshops are permitted in each genre. I’ve left blanks for courses so you may sign up for those courses up to three times. 5 You may also take graduate-level English or Spanish Literature courses taken on- or off-campus, with your advisor’s approval. As of October 2008, however, the UT Telecampus offers no graduate online coursework in these genres, and we don’t see any courses being offered in the near future. 6 You may take any graduate-level UTTC course with the instructor and your advisor’s approval. The purpose of these electives is primarily to help you do research in fields relating to your thesis. 7 After completing 24-30 hours of coursework, you should ask a professor to be your thesis advisor. After your thesis advisor has tentatively agreed to work with you, you must then write a three-page prospectus of the project you intend to write for your thesis—a book of poems, stories, screenplays, play scripts, or a novel, for example—and your thesis advisor must approve this prospectus officially before agreeing to work with you on your thesis.
