Figure 1. A comparison of the main arguments in the review and the commentary. The left panel contains a graphic depiction of Morling and

Evered's (2006) main arguments. The top portion represents their analysis of the original article (Rothbaum, Weisz, & Snyder, 1982) as including two distinct meanings of secondary control and four subtypes. The bottom portion depicts their proposed improvements: reserve the term secondary control for fit-focused conceptualizations which entail both acceptance and adjustment, and include the original subtypes. The dashed line connecting the overarching area of control with secondary control represents their conclusion that fit-focused definitions do not reflect or imply control. The right panel contains a graphic depiction of the alternative arguments presented in this commentary. The top portion represents an analysis of original article as including three strands, one that overlapped with relinquished control and focused on failure attributions of four subtypes, one focused on fit, and one that overlapped with primary control and focused on control. The bottom portion depicts a set of proposed improvements: discontinue consideration of these attributional patterns as potentially adaptive modes of control; label control-focused definitions as secondary control; refer to fit-focused definitions using a different label, such as accommodation; and consider control and accommodation as two distinct but potentially interacting processes of coping and resilience.
