American Civil Rights Movement – refers to the social movements in the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against black Americans and restoring voting rights to them. Martin Luther King Jr.- was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Rosa Parks- The 'first lady of civil Rights' when she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat in the colored section on the bus to a white person. Racial Discrimination - Actions, practices, or beliefs that reflect the racial worldview: the ideology that humans are divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called "races" in which some are considered superior and others inferior. Racial Segregation – Separating humans into racial groups in daily life routine. (restaurants/busses/rest rooms, etc.) Non Violent Civil disobedience –A peaceful way to respectfully disagree with certain laws that may be against ones beliefs and morals.

Characters in Hairspray Tracy Turnblad – Main character. Tracy is an overweight high school student who loves to dance. She wants to be on The Corny Collins Show to dance. She thinks black and white people should dance together on TV. Edna Turnblad – Tracy’s mother. Edna’s job is doing laundry. She has been in her house since the 1950s. She has not gone outside. She is embarrassed about her weight. Link Larkin – He dances on The Corny Collins Show. Tracy really likes him. Velma Von Tussle – She owns the TV station and The Corny Collins Show. She does not like different people, especially black people. She does not want them to dance together. She is Amber Von Tussle’s mother Corny Collins – Host of The Corny Collins Show. He thinks that black and white people should dance together. Motormouth Maybelle – Host of The Corny Collins Show. She is Seaweed and Little Inez Stubbs’ mother 2 Points Each 2 Points Each Amber Von Tussle – Velma’s daughter and dancer on The Corny Collins Show. She wants to be Link’s girlfriend Penny Pingleton – Tracy’s best friend. Her mother is very strict. Her mother does not want her to dance or be friends with black people. Seaweed – Tracy’s black classmate. He dances on “Negro Day” on The Corny Collins Show. Wilbur Turnblad – Tracy’s father and Edna’s wife. He owns a joke shop.
