Advanced Ceramics: Highly Versatile Materials Suitable for Many Applications (hall B1/ stand area 219/320; 325/426; 217/318)

When developing high-quality technologies, engineers pay more and more attention to technical ceramics or advanced ceramics. These terms refer to a whole group of materials, that have vastly different properties and solve problems in modern engineering with incredible efficiency. With their extreme hardness, wear resistance and dimension stability, advanced ceramics free developers in mechanical engineering from previous restrictions.

Up until today ceramics used to play only a minor role in industrial production. That, however, has changed dramatically in recent years. There is hardly a sector of technology left, which this very flexible material has not yet conquered. Nowadays, many engineers cannot imagine mechanical engineering or metal forming without advanced ceramics. Technical ceramics frequently function as parts of composite solutions, where they are specifically used for certain places, that require a higher wear resistance than the rest oft the assembly. Testing devices in apparatus engineering and handling elements in electronic manufacturing are examples for such constructions. Even traditional industries have discovered the benefits of this material: The automotive industry uses high- performance ceramics for welding and metal forming, the food industry for its complex production facilities and filling lines.

Bernhard Kühn, sales manager oft the Dortmund-based

Doceram GmbH (Germany) explains the various advantages of high-performance ceramics for metal forming in his presentation called „Innovations in mechanical engineering

– Advanced ceramics for metal forming“, which deals with questions of material engineering as well as with practical possibilities for application. He will give that presentation on the “Day of Technical Ceramics“, 22

October 2015, in the context of session 3 at the ceramitec.

The company’s portfolio demonstrates the wide range of application possibilities. It includes proven standard products such as cylinder, centring and welding pins as well as components for mechanical engineering and premium zirconium oxide for dental technology. With CERAZUR®, Doceram provides a highly efficient material for processing high-strength steels, and for the food industry, the nitride-ceramic VOLCERA®, which distinguishes itself by excellent chemical resistance, is the perfect choice. The popularity of high-performance ceramics increases quickly: They can be optimized for particular applications and the possibilities offered by advanced ceramics are not yet exhausted. Progress is still made and will continue, so that material properties will improve and new areas of use can be explored.
