A Family Perspective from the Office of Family Life Education (A Hope Appeal Agency ): In today’s gospel the Pharisee was talking about commandments (something we are forced to obey by external pressure) and Jesus was talking about love (an internal exhortation to give our heart, soul and mind to another). One demands allegiance, the other requires personal commitment. In our families, we daily lay down our lives for each other not because we “gotta” but because love compels us. Reflection from Father Clarence Rumble: Do unto others, no kidding: It’s Priesthood Sunday. Time to celebrate the folks who embrace a vocation for which the pay is lousy, the hours are terrible, the thanks is spotty, and the responsibility is enormous. It’s also the best job in the world. Priests are privileged to render a precious service to the community of faith. The good ones, of course, know this. Paul wasn’t simply motivated by a Type A personality that drove him to get things done and thoroughly. Nor can we dismiss him as a zealot. Paul was primarily fired by what Jesus advocates as the greatest fuel: all-consuming love. Imagine loving God with heart, soul, and mind! Imagine love so complete, it spills out in every encounter with a neighbor. Priesthood Sunday is a chance to celebrate and thank church leaders like Paul, who take very soberly the challenge to serve with an all-consuming love. They fill themselves with love for God, nurtured in prayer and retreat, in study and reflection. This love pours forth into everything else they’re summoned to do: lead worship, bring news to the assembly that sounds as good as it is, caring pastoral presence, and the bold example of a self-giving life. This is a good Sunday to hand off the homily to a deacon or lay leader. A good priest will never say the things about the priesthood that need to be said out loud. + + + + + Last Call for Candles: Our All Soul’s Memorial Service will be held on Thurs, 11/2, 7pm. $10/candle - please print clearly your name and the name(s) of the deceased on a plain envelope. You may drop it in the collection basket or at the rectory this weekend, 10/28-29. When we light the candle, you may carry it to the altar; and we will place it at the foot of the altar in their memory. + + + + + CHOW Barrel: Non-perishable foods are being collected for our Thanksgiving Baskets: stuffing & gravy mixes, sweet potatoes, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, canned fruit, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, Jello, pudding, apple crisp mix, cake and brownie mixes, frosting, pie crust mix and filling. Monetary donations also accepted - please indicate “Human Development”. Thank You! + + + + + Holiday volunteer sign-up sheets for all ministries are on the table in the vestibule.
