Cheerleading Application 2 Introduction to Cheerleader, Dance Team, Majorette, Drum Major, Flag Corps Member, Guard Tryouts and Student Body, Student Council, and Class Officer Elections

The selection and participation in the extracurricular activities of cheerleader, dance team, majorette, flag corps member, guard, show choir member, student body officer, student council officer or representative, and class officer are privileges rather than rights afforded to individual students. It is the administration’s intent to apply stringent rules upon those who may be eligible for try-outs and elections as well as to apply those rules during the period of continued participation of such students. With privileges goes responsibility. Those who are selected are representatives of the entire student body and are expected to demean themselves at all times to reflect favorably upon the Biloxi school system.

The following requirements for tryouts and elections, as well as the standards set for continuation as cheerleader, dance team member, majorette, drum major, flag corps member, guard, show choir member, student body officer, student council officer and representative, and class officer, shall apply equally to conduct during participation in school activities as well as all times outside and beyond the high school activity so long as the student may be identified as a representative of a student body of the Biloxi Public Schools.

The school administration, subject to the prescribed administrative hearings, shall be the sole authority in determining whether the alleged act or acts of misconduct reflect adversely upon students of the public school district to the extent of resulting in the disqualification for try-outs or for election or for continuation of eligibility.

In order to be eligible for try-outs or for election as cheerleader, dance team member, drum major, flag corps member, guard, show choir member, student body officer, student council officer or representative, or class officer, the student must meet all requirements established under policies specifically related to each activity in addition to being subject to the regulatory principles set forth above.

Students who reside in the Biloxi Public School district are eligible to try out for or participate as cheerleader, dance team member, majorette, drum major, guard, show choir member, or flag corps member if they meet the requirements of this policy; and tuition students are eligible if they meet the requirements of the Mississippi High School Activities Association.

NOTE: To meet physical examination requirements under district policy, cheerleader and dance applicants must provide proof of examination by the applicant’s personal physician. Physical examinations will not be provided by Biloxi Public Schools.

Cheerleading Application 16 Inherent risks Cheering is reasonably safe as long as certain guidelines are followed, but there is the risk of injury as in any athletic activity. Cheerleading is an anaerobic/aerobic activity which includes jumping, leaping, stunting, motions, and tumbling. All physicals must be on file in the athletic school office before you may participate in tryouts, practices, and games. Keep your coach informed of all injuries and/or chronic conditions. Although the probability of injury is minimized if you practice correctly, there is always the possibility of one occurring. Injuries that can occur in cheerleading include, but are not limited to the following: blisters, muscle strains, ligament sprains, joint and muscle soreness, abrasions, contusion, stress fractures, broken bones, spinal cord injuries involving paralysis, and even death. However, if you take certain precautions, the possibility of such injuries will be largely decreased. Be sure to consistently abide by the following guidelines: 1. NEVER stunt or tumble unless a coach or coach’s designee is present. 2. Always practice in the presence of a qualified coach. 3. Always warm-up appropriately before cheering (practices and games ) by jogging and stretching. 4. Do not attempt a stunt that you do not know how to perform safely and that has not been checked off by the coach. 5. Always use attentive spotters when stunting. 6. Always cheer in an area free from obstruction. 7. Always use mats or a grassy area when stunting during practice and games. 8. Do not cheer on uneven ground and wet surfaces. Do not stunt in cold or rainy weather. 9. Never talk, laugh, or play around when performing. 10. Report all injuries to the coach as soon as they occur. 11. Follow all trainer and doctor recommendations. 12. Lift weights to increase strength and guard against injuries. 13. Always wear shoes and clothing appropriate for cheerleading. 14. Never wear jewelry of an kind or chew gum when cheering (practice and games). 15. Always have your hair pulled back from your face and shoulders. 16. Eat nutritious meals and get plenty of rest. 17. Always ask for assistance or advice at any time. I have read the preceding warning. I thoroughly appreciate and understand the assumption of risks inherent in cheerleading participation. I acknowledge that I am physically fit and am voluntarily participating in this activity. Cheerleader’s Signature: X______Date: X______Parent Signature: X______Date: X______
