Nominations for 2016 may be individuals or groups. Only one award will be presented per successful group nomination.
CATEGORIES OF PROFESSION / CAREER DESCRIPTIONS
Arts and Culture Women or groups of women who make a significant, professional contribution to the development, preservation or appreciation of the visual or performing arts, which enrich the cultural life of the community.
Communications and Public Affairs Women or groups of women who make a significant, professional impact through public affairs, advertising, creative writing, public relations, communication technology or the media.
Education and Research Women or groups of women who excel in the field of education at any level, or women whose research has advanced a cause or bettered society.
Entrepreneur/Innovator Women or groups of women whose outstanding achievement and/or innovation in entrepreneurial or technological endeavors has led to successful business operations and/or success in breaking into new markets or technological fields.
Health, Sport & Wellness Women or groups of women exemplifying excellence in the health profession, or women who make a significant contribution to improving the community in the areas of: mental, emotional or physical health; sport; athletics; recreation or fitness.
Management and the Professions Women or groups of women who demonstrate outstanding achievement in: management in corporate, public sector or not-for-profit organizations and/or in the advancement of her/their profession.
Young Woman of Distinction Women or groups of women who demonstrate outstanding achievement in: improving the lives and inspiring activism of young women and girls in their communities. *May not exceed 25 years of age as of July 31, 2016 NOMINATION PROCESS: To meet selection criteria, each nominee or group of nominees must: Have made a lasting contribution to her profession in a non-voluntary capacity. Agree to be nominated and sign the nomination form Not be a previous winner in the category for which she is nominated ** for the Young Woman of Distinction award, the Recipient must not exceed 25 years of age as of July 31st, 2016
THE NOMINATION PACKAGE CONSISTS OF SEVEN PARTS : *MS Word or Adobe PDF Format and type written ONLY
1) A completed and signed Nomination Form (see below)
2) A completed one page Highlights document (see below – to not exceed one page in length)
3) A completed Letter of Nomination explaining why you believe this woman or group is eligible for a Woman of Excellence Award. (Maximum 200 words) *Letters exceeding 200 words will not be presented to the selection committee.
i) Describe her Leadership, Participation & Contributions to her category of profession/career in which she is being nominated.
ii) Describe her Leadership, Participation and Contributions in the community-at-large or volunteer activities.
iii) Describe her personal achievements (recognition by employers, peers and community or achievement of personal goals)
4) A biography of the nominee or group, highlighting the nominee’s accomplishments. Should the nominee be chosen as a recipient, this will be used in publicity and will be printed in the Event Program. No resumes! (Maximum 100 words, word document only and not in point form) The biography will include education, job experience and community involvement. Please do not include items such as: How many children the nominee has, pet names, etc… This should be as professional as possible. *Biographies exceeding 100 words will not be presented to the Selection Committee.
5) Two Letters of Support, from persons other than the Nominator, stating the reasons she/the group deserves to be nominated (Maximum 200 words). *Letters exceeding 200 words will not be presented to the selection committee.
6) 1 Photo - 3" wide, 300 dpi, JPG format. These must be expandable to 300 dpi and should not be low resolution. (If this is a group nomination, all members should be present in the photo). 7) **Please note: Up to 3 extra pages of attachments, media clippings, etc., may be submitted. No videos or products will be accepted. The Materials must be in an electronic format and will not be returned. Information not presented in a legible electronic format will be dismissed. Incomplete or late applications will automatically be disqualified.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: Nomination packages must meet all of the above criteria including the signed nomination form and photo. *Packages not meeting the above requirements and including more than 3 additional pages of attachments/media clippings will not be presented to the selection committee.
The completed package must be emailed to [email protected]. Nominations sent via fax or mail will not be accepted. Nomination with items 2, 3, 4, and 5 submitted in any format other than MS Word or Adobe PDF will not be accepted.
Electronic documents should be submitted in MS WORD format or Adobe PDF using 10-12pt font. Because a signature is required on the nomination form, it should be scanned, or an independent email sent (to the email address above) from the nominee giving their permission for the nomination. See photo requirements above.
The Nominating Committee will confirm receipt of each nomination via e-mail and will telephone all successful candidates and their nominators in each category upon final selection. Unsuccessful candidates and their nominators will be contacted via email. This communication will be completed by September 30th, 2016.
The Committee reserves the right to move a nominee to a more appropriate category and to withhold an Award in any category. Nominations will be reconsidered for two years at the request of the nominee. All recipients will be honored at the Progress Women of Excellence Awards on Wednesday, November 19th, 2016 – 5:30 pm at the World Trade and Convention Centre, Halifax.

SELECTION CRITERIA There are three categories of measurement: 1) Profession / Career; 2) Community; 3) Personal Achievements. Areas that may be considered in the development of a package are provided below. These lists are not all-inclusive and are meant only as a thought-provoking process, if needed.
Criteria weighting is broken down into three components – Leadership, Participation and Contribution. These three criteria provide a consistent framework in which to describe and

1) Profession / Career in which they are being nominated (50% Weighted) *For the Young Woman of Distinction, this could include Academic Accomplishments) Made significant contribution – i.e. changes made to standards, ideals, practices, legislation, etc. Brought attention to the industry/business or heightened awareness in the business world or community Breakthrough in a largely male industry Breakthrough in a newer profession Growth or Impact in the profession/industry due to her contribution Achieved her success without impeding the success of others Professional Awards / Recognition Role model in the company / organization Breadth of experience of the individual which contributes to her excellence
2) Community (25% Weighted) Contributions to the community through her job Provides opportunities to learn the business (internal or external) Sponsors events or contributes to the community Individual contributions (i.e. time) to charitable organizations or people in need Committee work (business related or volunteer) Community Awards / Recognition Role model in the community (i.e. well known, recognized as a leader/reputable)
3) Personal Achievements (25% Weighted) Met a personal goal (i.e. marathon, finished university) Balance of life (family / profession)
The Selection Committee evaluates the nominee on the same criteria within a rating system. Each Selection Committee member is provided with a copy of the submission for review prior to the Selection Committee meeting. At this committee meeting there is a joint review of the submissions.
The documents are provided to each Selection Committee member without any embellishments; that is, all items are presented in black and white print.
