Every established country has a political system, or government to make and enforce laws, make decisions, solve problems, resolve conflicts, and help daily life run smoothly. Some systems allow the people of the country to have a say, and others let the leaders make all the decisions. So a political system is determined by who is in power, how much power he, she, or they have, and who is allowed to make decisions.

The type of political system, or government is connected to the type of economic system that is dominant in that country. Certain types of governments partner well with certain economies. For example, it would be difficult for a communist economy to work in a country with a democratic government. Why? Read on and you will find out…

In the future, you will be doing research or learning about different civilizations and countries. It is important to understand the terms used to discuss political systems and economies, so that you understand how a country functions when you learn about it. It will also help you better understand the country you live in and current events throughout the world.

Although a country’s political or economic system may change, the meaning of these terms don’t!! Learn them now and they will be useful throughout your academic career. You could even keep this as a reference!
