EVALUATION METHODS:

Exam 1 75 pts. Exam 2 75 pts. Exam 3 75 pts. Exam 4 75 pts. Quizzes 100 pts Assignment 1 75 pts Assignment 2 75 pts 550 points

Grading Scale

A ≥495 pts (≥90.0%) B 440 – 494 (80.0%-89.9%) C 385 – 439 (70.0%-79.9%) D 330 – 384 (60.0%-69.9%) F ≤329 (≤59%)

I do not round grades! If you want to know how you are doing in class add your points and refer to this scale.

Keep all graded material & grade feedback. If you believe I incorrectly scored something, see me as soon as possible. Once the final week of class has started I will not re-grade material that has been returned more than a week prior. This will encourage you to talk to me as problems arise and avoid the common problem of seeing me for ‘increased points’ as soon as you notice your final grade may be ‘bordering’ the next letter grade.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

All assignments must be typed and handed in on time. If you cannot be in class on the day an assignment is due, please put it in the drop box on Black Board, send it with a friend to class, or bring it by my office prior to class. This should not need to be said, but I need to emphasize the importance of citing sources. When paraphrasing, be careful, use quotes as needed and always thoroughly cite your sources.

Exams (4 Total) (75 points each)  20 multiple-choice questions (40 pts.)  7 short answer questions (35 pts.)  There are NO make-up exams unless you receive approval prior to the scheduled exam date.

Quizzes / Discussion Topics (10 Total)  Each is a geography quiz based on a region of the world  You will be asked to do the quiz online and print the results. You will need to take the quiz in “strict test mode” and your name needs be typed in before you print/save (i.e. not written on later). The results will be uploaded to blackboard (or turned in during class).  Quiz 1: Northern & Western Africa  Quiz 2: Eastern, Central & South Africa  Quiz 3: Asia  Quiz 4: Middle East  Quiz 5: South America  Quiz 6: Central America  Quiz 7: Caribbean  Quiz 8: Western Europe  Quiz 9: Eastern Europe  Quiz 10: Canada OR Oceania

Assignments (2 Total)

Assignment 1 (75 pts) You will need to do an oral presentation of your country to the class. You should focus on making it interesting, (i.e. making us want to visit there, study there, do business there, or simply learn more about it). You can use outside videos but they should take up no more than 5 minutes of your 10-15 minute presentation.

Assignment 2 (75 pts) You are to write a cultural expansion paper, approximately 3-4 pages. In order to write this you must do something to actively expand your cultural awareness. Some ideas include:  Reading a book about a culture or subculture you are not affiliated with  Attend a meeting or event for a sub culture to which you do not belong  Learn about another faith, cuisine, or a cultural ritual. Your paper should include answers to the following questions. Why did you pick this culture? Why did you choose this activity? What did you learn?

4 Missouri University of Science & Technology Department of Business and Information Technology

Guidelines for all assignments  All assignments must be typed.  I do not accept E-mailed assignments. Your assignments must be printed and turned in at the beginning of the class period or submitted via blackboard.  Late assignments will be penalized 5 points per day. After one week, the assignment will no longer be accepted.  Assignments should be comprised of information paraphrased from other sources, not full of direct quotes or ‘cut and pasted’ information/facts. When possible, use information from the book or items discussed in class to compose your analysis.

Attendance Points (? Points - Bonus Points Added to Exams)  Some days I will take attendance. I will add 1(or more) bonus points to your exam for each of the days that you are counted in attendance. Only those in class on time (and for the duration of the class) will be counted. So, if you arrive late or leave early, you won’t be included on the sign in sheet.  If you have an excused absence, that is fine, it won’t hurt you… but I am NOT adding bonus points to your grade regardless of the reason you missed class. It is simply too much record keeping/emails/hassle to document. If you are in class and accounted for, you get a point. Simple as that. No exceptions.  This is the only ‘bump’ in exam grades. No additional rounding, curving, etc.  This is also not applicable for distance students (on the flip side, distance students usually average better exam grades; so this policy should average out the section grades)

Participation Feel free to ask questions regarding any material covered in the lecture or in the reading material assigned for class. If you do not ask questions it is assumed that you understood everything perfectly!  If you have any relevant work experience or a good example that would add to the discussion… speak up! Examples help many students to better understand the material.  For each class, be prepared! You should have read all assigned material, as you may be asked questions regarding the readings.

5 Missouri University of Science & Technology Department of Business and Information Technology
