LOS ANCIANOS M.C. 2011 TECATE HARE SCRAMBLES ENTRANT INFORMATION
Thank you for inquiring about our 2011 Tecate Hare Scambles. Were it not for racers like you to patronize our events, Clubs like ours would cease to exist. There are a number of things you need to know to make your race weekend fun, safe and successful.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (Actually...answers to frequently asked questions.) YOU WILL NEED A PASSPORT OR PASSPORT CARD TO RETURN TO THE US! There is NO need to obtain a tourist visa (and pay the $18) if you are not staying in Baja over 72 hours Carry your driver’s license and your passport or passport card. You MAY be required to pay a duty of approximately 65 cents a gallon for gas in cans YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE CURRENT OWNERSHIP PAPERS (REGISTRATION OR PINK SLIP) FOR YOUR MOTORCYCLES AND PRESENT THEM UPON DEMAND. They almost always check and you will not be allowed into Baja if you are asked and you cannot comply.. If you have more Motorcycles in your possession than you have people in your party, you may be turned back. Make it a point to have as many bodies as you do bikes. The Tecate Border Crossing can be a bit more stringent than Otay Mesa (see below) but even they have lightened up compared to recent years. DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT CARRYING GUNS, AMMO OR DRUGS INTO, OR IN, MEXICO. There may be roadblock/search stops and you will go DIRECTLY TO MEXICAN PRISON. ABSOLUTELY purchase a Mexican automobile insurance policy (particularly liability insurance). There are vendors near the border on both sides. Don’t do anything in Baja you would get in trouble for in the USA.
DIRECTIONS
We will try to hang orange and black Los Ancianos Club arrows to show you the way.
The race course is on private property a mile east of a yellow metal gate at a fork in the road about 12 miles down a major dirt road called Compadre Trail. There is a Mexican military checkpoint right at the yellow gate. They are under orders to “inspect” every single vehicle that passes. The “inspections” typically only take a minute or two, but if there are a numbers of cars lined up to get into the race, this could cost you 15-30 minutes on race day, make your travel plans accordingly.
To get to the Compadre trail turnoff from the Baja California Hwy #2, you may cross into Baja at either Tecate (at the end of Hwy 188 off CA State Hwy 94) or at Otay Mesa (South San Diego off of I-805 and Hwy 905). Do not bother crossing at the major entrance at the end of I-5 in downtown Tijuana (it can be tough to find your way East). AAA has GREAT Baja maps and guidebooks.
Crossing at Tecate - NOTE: THE TECATE BORDER CROSSING IS CLOSED FROM 11:00PM TO 5:00AM! From I-5, I-805, or I-15 South, take Hwy 94 East to Hwy 188 (Tecate turnoff). For those of you coming west on I-8 from the Imperial Valley or Arizona, you can get off onto westbound Hwy 94 in the mountains at Lake Morena and take that to the Hwy 188 turnoff. The border crossing is about 1.5 miles off Hwy 94 at the end of Hwy 188. Proceed across the Border, meet the friendly courteous Customs Officer and proceed straight ahead (due South) to the second stoplight (the main drag). When in town observe all speed limits and stop signs! Yes, 25kph is 16mph! Go 16 and let the locals pass you. The very scenic Plaza is to your left across the street. Turn left at this light and simply follow the main road east out of town. This is the free (Libre) road, Hwy 2, that ultimately goes to Mexicali. About 3 miles East of town after passing through an industrial area you will go up an overpass and be given a choice of the free road (Libre) to the left or the toll road (Quota) straight ahead to Mexicali. We recommend the Toll Road (Quota). It is faster and way safer. After 15 miles on the toll road, you will reach a toll booth at the exit (Salida) for El Hongo. The toll for a single vehicle is about $2.30 (they accept dollars). EXIT THE TOLL ROAD ONTO THE FREE ROAD, HWY #2, AT THIS BOOTH, and continue east about 1 mile into the town of El Hongo. At the first major dirt street, see the new OXXO convenience store, the Los Ancianos arrows and the green Rancho Santa Veronica Sign. Turn right here, and follow the arrows and signs to the race course at Ejido Neji. Crossing at Otay Mesa - NOTE: THE OTAY BORDER CROSSING IS OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY. From I-805 South, take Otay Mesa Road (Hwy 905) East and follow it all the way to the end at the Otay Mesa Border Crossing. Meet the friendly and courteous Customs Officer. Proceed straight ahead (due South) 1.2 miles through one stop sign (be careful, fast cross traffic coming from your right does not stop) to the first light. Turn left (East) at this light onto Industrial Boulevard, and pass about 2 miles through an industrial area where the street becomes the Hwy 2 toll road (Quota) to Tecate and Mexicali. 6.5 miles after crossing the border, you will pass through a pricey toll booth (about $5.25 for one vehicle and they accept dollars). At 9 and 15 miles past the toll booth you will pass turnoffs for Tecate, DO NOT TAKE THEM. Stay on the toll road till you get to the second toll booth (the one discussed above). Get off onto the free road at El Hongo and follow the above directions.
Please drive safely. Please arrive as early as possible to give you (and us) plenty of time to get you registered and entered.
