GROUP MANAGER ROLE CARD

Your role is not to participate in the discussion itself but to ensure that your group works well together and achieves its goal.

You might:  Begin by clarifying what the goal is  Watch to ensure everyone is involved  Move the group on if they seem stuck  Tell the group if they are drifting off-task  Summarise what has been achieved so far  Remind the group about timing  Make sure the group finishes on time

DISCUSSION LEADER ROLE CARD

Your role is to lead the discussion in order to make the discussion as purposeful as possible.

You might: Invite quiet people to share their ideas Politely stop someone talking who has talked a lot Listen for good questions which the group do not fully explore Invite group members to explain their points in more detail Ask some probing questions to move the discussion on Summarise the discussion so far at key points PRESENTER ROLE CARD

Your role is to present the ideas of your group to the whole class as clearly and concisely as possible.

You might: Make a bullet point list of key points Check with the group that this list summarises their ideas Practise speaking loudly and clearly with your group Stand up to present the ideas Try to look at your audience while you present your notes Project your voice to present the ideas

LISTENER ROLE CARD

Your role is to listen to your group talking and observe how well they are working together. You will feedback your observation at the end of the task.

You might:  Consider if anyone talks too much so that others can’t speak  Consider if anyone doesn’t seem to contribute  Notice anyone who asks a really helpful question  Notice anyone who makes a helpful comment  Consider if the groups gets distracted from the task  Jot down examples to help you remember SCRIBE ROLE CARD

Your role is to capture what your group say in writing so that these notes can be used later.

You might:  Ensure that you listen very carefully to the discussion  Use numbers or bullet points to organise your notes  Leave plenty of space between your notes so you can add to them if the group say something more about this topic  Leave out unimportant words so that you capture the big ideas  Stop the discussion from time to time and read your notes to the group to check they are correct

EVALUATOR ROLE CARD

Your role is to listen to and observe how well your group works together and how well they achieve their goals.

You will need to:  listen very carefully to the discussion  note when group-members allow each other to speak  note when group members are invited to speak  note how well disagreements are handled  note when group members ask each other questions to understand each other better  decide whether you think the group achieved its goal
