Having lived and written during the horrors of World War I, Franz Kafka is a famously confused author. He used imaginary and surreal circumstances in order to describe real things and situations. For instance, his story, The Metamorphosis explores the lack of compassion that exists among family members, and it seeks to correct the flawed morals within society. An understanding of what happened in his life and in society around him is needed to appreciate the main themes in his literature.
