North Seattle College, ENGL& 101 Hybrid Syllabus, Spring Quarter 2017 Name: JC Clapp Email: [email protected] Office location: 2313A of the Instruction Building, NSCC campus Office Hours: Wednesdays 1:30-3:30 p.m. and by appointment Campus Location: Classroom: College Center building, room 3450 On-Campus One weekly on-campus meeting on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-9:20 p.m., with additional Requirements class time being conducted online -- both on-campus and online parts of the class are required. Prerequisite(s): This course is a college level English composition course requiring the student to provide the instructor with evidence from the NSC Testing Center or from his/her previous NSC Developmental English Instructor documenting that the student has the skills necessary to succeed in this class. Late Paper Policy I do not accept late assignments. For each of the graded assignments you need to turn in, there is a specific due date/time. Those are all spelled out on the Course Calendar of Due Dates. To turn in an assignment, locate the appropriate drop box under the appropriate week. In-Class Participation Assignments (38 points total) Reading Outline -- paper copy brought to class -- 2 points "The Right to Die" reading printed, annotated and brought to class -- 8 points Introduction to Analysis paper typed and brought to class -- 6 pts. Evaluation assignment topic ideas typed and brought to class -- 6 pts. Outline of Proposing a Solution assignment typed and brought to class -- 10 pts. *Note that there is a possibility that other small in-class assignments may be given throughout the term.

Individual Writing Assignments (565 points total) Reading Outline -- 10 points Summary Assignment--50 points Analysis of a Text assignment -- 100 points Evaluation assignment -- 100 points Proposing a Solution assignment -- 100 points Timed-Essay assignment -- 100 points

Entire Points for the Quarter = 648 Classroom Etiquette and Food and Beverages: No problem! Please just make sure you aren't disruptive and that you Policies clean up after yourself.

Lateness: Please do not be late to class. It is disruptive to the rest of us. If you are habitually late, I will help you find a course that better fits your schedule.

Laptops: At times you will be asked to write in class and/or go to a particular website. If you have a laptop or iPad/tablet and would like to use it during class (when I tell you you may), that's fine. However, you can't have your laptop out unless explicitly told that we'll be using it for a class activity. Keep electronics completely put away in your bag unless told otherwise.

Cell Phones: Silence your cell phone and put it away in your bag. You are not allowed to take it out during class, nor are you allowed to send or receive texts during class.

Respect: Please listen when others are speaking and when it's your turn to speak, please do so respectfully.
