NSPE Leader Development Task Force Recommendation for NSPE Board of Directors Action January 6, 2007 Meeting

NSPE Strategic Plan Objective 1.2: ”Share association management knowledge, resources, staff and best practices.” Recommendation #1: Approve use of the Leader Orientation Guide by affiliated state societies, chapters, interest groups, and other NSPE entities. Background of Recommendation At its Spring (April 23) 2005 meeting, the Board of Directors approved LDTF Recommendation #2 (see attached) with certain modifications. The primary one was that the LDTF – and not the State & Chapters Activities Task Force – was assigned the responsibility to implement the approved recommendation. The effort to develop a work product commensurate with the Board’s direction began in 2005-06. The result is the Leader Orientation Guide (full copy attached), designed to be accessed on the NSPE website as opposed to hard copy and/or CD genres. The task force members feel that a document on the website can be easily downloaded and is easier and cheaper to update vs. other alternatives. The concept of the Guide was based on experience of members of the task force who had designed and/or used similar tools in their state societies, including Georgia, Kansas, New Jersey, and Texas. Most of the content was authored by a sub-group of the ’05-’06 task force. Some of this content was inspired by the material presented at NSPE Winter Meeting Leader Training sessions by Jack Schlegel, CAE. The viewpoint of the design sub-group was that as many elected and appointed leaders as possible of NSPE’s affiliates should benefit from the training received by the limited number of attendees at those Winter Meetings. The means of accomplishing this is the Leader Orientation Guide. It can be universally available and adapted easily by using groups - as deemed appropriate. A user’s PowerPoint presentation – based on the Guide – is in development. The content has been reviewed by the SSEC and the Communications Advisory Group; the language has been refined by the NSPE Publications staff. Actual Recommendation for Board Action Approve the posting of the Leader Orientation Guide on the NSPE website and authorize appropriate promotional activity to inform and encourage the affiliate state societies and other NSPE entities to use this tool to train elected and appointed leaders and also designate periodic updates to the content of the Guide to ensure optimum accuracy in its content. Estimated Impact on Budget Because this tool will be posted on the website, no Direct Expense should be incurred. There will be limited staff effort to post information on the website as revisions are made periodically. NSPE Leadership Development Task Force Recommendation for NSPE Board of Directors Action April 23, 2005 Meeting

NSPE Strategic Plan Goal/Objective No.: 3.3 OBJECTIVE: Create and implement career planning and development initiatives, including career-growth and licensure mentoring opportunities, managerial skills, and leadership development.

Recommendation #2: It is the recommendation of the Leadership Development Task Force (LDTF) that NSPE encourage and assist state societies in offering seminars and programs designed to orient, educate and enlighten new state volunteers or officers, and/or current chapter volunteers or officers, to help develop skills and knowledge necessary to put forth the mission and goals of the society.

Background of Recommendation: The Leadership Development Task Force has identified two distinct areas of leadership training that are essential for its members to recognize:  Society Leader Orientation for NSPE’s national, state and chapter leaders;  Leadership Skills Development for members to become effective leaders in all areas of their professional and civic lives. Task Force Recommendation 2 addresses Society Leader Orientation. After surveying the State Societies, the LDTF has found that most State Societies do not provide society leader orientation training to newly elected State and Chapter Officers. The LDTF has reached the conclusion that there should be a role for NSPE in assisting State Societies in providing training for Society Leaders (Society Leader Orientation). NSPE should encourage and assist state societies in offering seminars and programs designed to orient, educate and enlighten new state volunteers or officers, and/or current chapter volunteers or officers, to help develop skills and knowledge necessary to put forth the mission and goals of the society. Seminars may be presented by current state volunteers or officers, the state Executive Director or a paid facilitator. Important topics for orientation include the duties and responsibilities of the state or chapter officers, duties and responsibilities of the committee and practice division chairs, membership initiatives and resources available within NSPE and the state society, a complete calendar of events and activities and critical due dates for action, information on how to run an effective meeting, communication vehicles such as website design and management, publications such as newsletters and directories, printed material for promoting the society, review of state society and/or chapter governance requirements, and budget and other fiduciary responsibilities. Actual Recommendation for Board Action: Charge the State and Chapter Activities Task Force with development of a Society Leadership Orientation program for NSPE State Societies and Chapters. The Leadership Development Task Force is available to assist in this effort.

Estimated Impact on Budget for 2006 Fiscal Year. No fiscal impact is anticipated.
