Human Rights Initiative 2801 Swiss Avenue Dallas, TX 75204 214-855-0520 Provides free legal assistance to immigrant applying for asylum within first year of immigrating. You must be able to prove well-founded fear of persecution due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, membership in a particular social group, and victim of a violent crime. Must call for an appointment. Hours: Mon-Fri 9am-Noon, 1pm-5pm. Observes all major holidays.

Salvation Army 451 West Avenue D Garland, TX 75042 972-272-4531 Hours for assistance: Mon-Fri: 9am-11:30am, 1pm-3pm Offers financial assistance with rent, mortgage, utilities, food and clothing. Call before you go to see what paperwork necessary to bring to the appointment.

Catholic Charities 214-389-1340 Call number for interview and to find out which site will provide food, air/heat units for home, bus passes, back to school supplies or holiday assistance you are requesting.

Good Samaritan 214 North 12th Garland, TX 75041 972-276-2263 Provides food multiple times a month for homeless. If qualify, provides food vouchers that allow you to pick up food the 3rd Thursday of the month from Springcreek Church (on the list).

The Roc 3375 Edgewood Dr. Garland, TX 75042 972-272-1002 Offers food the 1st Thursday of the month from 10am-1pm and last Saturday of the month from 9am-1pm. Need to bring proof you are a resident of Garland. Also offers a variety of classes, call for information.

If money available, can assist with rent, utility deposit, utility bills, and security deposits. Mt. Hebron Baptist Church 1233 State Hwy 66 Garland, TX 75040 972-276-5218 Provides rental assistance if you are at risk of losing your home/apartment (decision made on a case by case basis).

First Christian Church of Rowlett 7301 Miller Rd. Rowlett, TX 75088 972-475-3559 Provide food, clothing. Operation Rowlett Reindeer: Provides toys, clothing and food for families in need at Christmas.

Rowlett Needy Children’s Fund 972-463-3245 Provides assistance on a case by case basis. All volunteer program, so no office.

COUNSELING SERVICES

Counseling Institute of Texas 3200 Southern Drive, Suite 100 Garland, TX 75043 972-271-4300 Offers adjustment counseling, family and individual counseling. Offers sliding scale payment, some grant money for counseling at little or no cost. Spanish counselors on staff.

Mosaic Family Services 4144 north Central Expressway (Hwy 75), Suite 530 Dallas, TX 214-821-5393 If new to country and in crisis, offers individual and group counseling for adults and children as well as art and play therapy. These services, along with social services, are free of charge. Provides language fluency in 25 languages.

Centers for Survivors of Torture 4102 Swiss Avenue Dallas, TX 214-827-2314 Only for immigrants who have experienced severe physical or emotional pain in an effort by torturers in an effort to obtain information, confession, punishment for act committed or discrimination. Offers counseling services, food, clothing, medical services, transportation, English classes, assistance with employment and legal assistance at no cost if meet above criteria.

Spanish ELL Arapaho Road Baptist Church 2256 Arapaho Rd, Church Family Life Center, (Room 208) Garland, TX 75044 972-495-2223 Classes held Wednesdays from 7pm-8pm Cost: FREE Children may attend children’s activities at the church while parents in class

First Baptist Church 801 West Avenue D Garland, TX 75040 972-276-7194 Choice of ONE of the classes held on Sundays: 5 pm-6:pm; Tuesdays: 6:30 pm-8:00 pm; Wednesdays: 6:15 pm-7:45 pm Cost: FREE Chidren may attend children’s activities at the church on Sundays and Wednesdays while parents are in class.
