Lesson Topic Season

Goals for students: Functional goals: 1. Ask and answer in-depth questions about weather conditions, the influence of geography and climatic changes, and express preferences for visiting specific areas of India with reasons 2. Talk about products and perspective in context of weather/seasons 3. Ask questions about the different geographic places and conditions/problems/desirable aspects of the weather in those locations 4. Describe in detail the variety of seasons and weather patterns in India 5. Narrate orally and in writing weather forecasts for TV/Newspaper

Linguistic Goals: 1. Describe weather using a variety of vocabulary, phrases, and expressions 2. Refine pronunciation of the names of Hindu months, seasons, and weather conditions 3. Narrate orally and in writing using the habitual present tense 4. Recognize and speak using the present and future tenses 5. Describe with detail; compare weather conditions in various parts of India using appropriate linguistic patterns 6. Identify and explain in common language idioms and proverbs on seasons/weather

Materials Authentic video clips of weather reports, authentic news articles about weather conditions in India, slide-show, video clippings, map of India, Hindi calendar, handouts, hand- made cards to play Pictionary in the classroom (to reinforce weather related verbs, phrases and idioms)

Handouts (12 in two lessons)

Prerequisite:  Knowledge of simple present tense  Knowledge of habitual present tense, simple interrogative words, adjectives Duration Two Lessons (one hour each)

Grouping strategy Small Group (2-4 students working together on handouts # 1.3, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, TPR, 2.1 2.2)

How will the group be decided? Random names drawn from a bag

Procedure:  Warm up Teacher will show the following video of the Hindi song ‘ततत त ममायकके मत ‘to set the context: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNfJVvPG5FM

 LESSON One (One Hour) The teacher will start the lesson by telling the class, they will learn about India’s weather and seasons and introduce the class the following:

1. There are six seasons in India vs. four in USA. Handout 1.1 (pictures of seasons)

2. A map of India showing major cities and their temperature in all seasons. Handout 1.2 and watch Video clipping (attached)

3. Delhi, Mumbai and Washington weather in Hindi. Students in groups of two will learn weather related vocabulary and compare the weather of the cities. Handout 1.3

4. Names of Hindu months corresponding to India’s seasons and the Gregorian months. Teacher will show an authentic Hindu calendar and talk about it in the class. Handout 1.4 (names of Hindu months, season and Gregorian months)

5. Pictures of people wearing different traditional clothes in different seasons in India Handout 1.5 (slide show)

6. Next she will show the authentic images of six seasons. As the teacher is showing the images she will say यह सरर्दी कका ममौसम हह, यह पतझड़ कका ममौसम हह etc. and students will repeat after her. Then each student will take turn to show the images and ask the class e.g. कयका यह सरर्दी कका ममौसम हह? यह कमौन - सका ममौसम हह? Etc. Handout 1.6 (slide show)

7. Now the teacher will show the images of seasons and introduce the root verbs associated with them e.g.पड़, गगिर, चल etc. and their habitual, present and future forms e.g.सरर्दी कक ममौसम म ठठंड पड़तत हह, शशिमलकाम बरर्फगगिर रहह हह, कल हवका चलकेगित and so on. (slide show)

8. The students will be given two handouts: Handout 1.7 (Introducing the verbs form habitual, present and future tense in context of weather. Students will work in groups of two on this handout. One will say the verb and the other tells its form)

9. Handout 1.8 (Each student will fill in the blanks with right verb form)

10. The class will now do TPR in groups of four. They will use flyswatter and the pictures of weather elements to do TPR. (E.g. one student will say चलतती हहand the other student will point to picture of हवका and say it loud हवका चलतती हह and so on )

 LESSON 2 (One Hour)

1. Students will be given the handout 1.9 and 2.0 to review what they have done in the previous class

2. Next students will be given the handout 2.1 http://www.abhivyakti-hindi.org/prakriti/rituyen/seasons1.htm They will read the text and write the answers in pair.

3. A list of some common Hindi idioms will be given to the students. Handout 2.2 Students will play charade in groups of four to demonstrate the idioms, phrases and proverbs

4. Conversation practice in groups of two on weather and season

Post lesson: Role play (Students interview each other to gather information on what would be the weather like in certain months in major cities and at popular tourist destinations in India. One plays the role of concierge and the other a tourist)
