Cement Masons Job Profile and Description

As the concrete is the base of every building from home patios to freeways and it is the duty of a cement mason to ensure the proper and safe installation of the foundation. He or she has the duty to mix, compact, spread, finish and cure the concrete for buildings, roads, tunnels, bridges. He or she uses hand tools, troweling machinery and other types of power tools for doing it.

Duties and Responsibilities

There are the following duties and responsibilities to be fulfilled by a cement mason:

 The person has to prepare concrete by mixing gravel, water, sand and cement.  He or she has to move mixture to the position by using the concrete pump.  He or she needs to operate the paving and troweling machine that polishes the surface of the concrete.  It will be the duty to create various textures on the surface by using hand held tools for shaping and creating designs.  He or she has also to mix and apply the color pigments when required.  It will be needed to review how the heat or cold air affects curing of the concrete material once laid and smoothed.  He or she has to expose aggregate stones in sidewalks and walls for designing and shaping.  He or she has the duty to fabricate the concrete beams panels and columns.  The responsibility to supervise and direct the workers in using the tools and machines.  He or she has to direct the casting of concrete mixture and use of shovels or other special tools for spreading it.

Skills and Specifications

The required skills and specifications are as follows:

 The person should have thorough and deep knowledge of concrete characteristics.  He or she should have the ability to detect abnormalities by touching the mixture.  He or she necessarily has the knowledge of the proportion of various elements required in the concrete mixture.  He or she should be able to apply the best damage control methods and when required.  He or she should have the ability to cope with stiffening work environment.  The person should have a bit of managerial skill as well and should have the artistic sense and creative mind.

Education and Qualifications

There are no minimum education qualifications required for a person to be cement masons.

 The person needs to have a high school degree which will definitely help the candidate in his work.  He or she should have got the training in technical schools.
