GUIDELINES FOR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Health Sciences and Human Services Library University of Maryland 601 West Lombard Street Baltimore, Maryland 21201

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) of the University Of Maryland offers an engaging, dynamic, and flexible learning experience for a motivated MLIS student. HS/HSL provides collections and services for faculty, staff, and students of the University of Maryland, as well as for the University of Maryland Medical Center. It is the only academic health sciences library in the University System of Maryland. The library is headed by former president of the Medical Library Association, M.J. Tooey, and is also home to the Southeastern/Atlantic Regional Medical Library of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Interns will have the opportunity to be mentored by experienced health sciences librarians. This is an unpaid internship. The purpose of the internship is to advance health sciences librarianship through mentorship and training. The internship will also provide educational opportunities that MLIS students can bring with themselves as they move onto future careers in librarianship. Possible Projects Include:

 Program evaluation

 Community outreach

 Digital repository development

 Create online resources such as LibGuides

 E-resource management/collection development

 Historical/Special Collection management

 Marketing and promotion

 Design online tutorials/instructional design

 Other projects are available depending upon the interests of the intern and the needs of the library Interns will have the opportunity to develop basic skills in health sciences librarianship. They may attend library staff and departmental meetings, lead library instruction sessions, provide reference and research assistance and more. Application Process for Intern:

 Interested candidates must submit a current CV/resume documenting your work history.  A cover letter (or “cover” email) that includes the following information:  Your interest in the internship. Please include any information about relevant experience or skills that you would bring to this position.  Detail the aspects of health librarianship you wish to focus on and the skills you aim to develop (for example: reference, teaching, library technology). If you have a specific project you would like to work on, please outline it.  Specify whether the internship is for academic credit or for experience only. If you are seeking academic credit, please include details on the requirements needed for the internship to qualify for credit at your institution.

Requirements:

 Applicants must be enrolled in ALA-accredited library program and have an interest in medical librarianship  Recent graduates (within the last year) from an ALA-accredited program will also be considered  Minimum time commitment of one semester is preferred. Students are expected to work at least once a week. Before the internship starts, the intern will work with his or her mentor to determine the duration and working schedule for the internship.  Hours can be scheduled during the week, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. (limited scheduling accommodations may be possible)  In-person or phone interview is required.

Overview of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library: The HS/HSL is the second largest medical school library on the East Coast, with over 900 seats, 45 group study rooms, three computer classrooms and a state-of-the-art presentation practice studio. Its collection contains more than 170,000 books, 9,000 ebooks and 4,900 online journals. Sixty-seven FTEs and 30 faculty librarians staff the library. The Library supports the 12,000 students, faculty, and staff on the University’s 60-acre research and technology complex of 58 buildings. The University’s eight professional and graduate schools include the schools of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health and social work.
