Primary School Tall Ship Initiative

MAYBE SAILING / TALL SHIP PROGRAMME FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS.

Bradford Primary Improvement Partnership via the Teaching and Learning Group has developed a unique programme with Maybe Sailing to introduce primary pupils to sail training activities. The programme will operate again next year, commencing late March 2014.

Many schools from Bradford successfully took part in the programme during 2013 with pupils and staff enjoying a fun and educational experience through the unique setting of an historic Tall Ship. Further improvements have been made for the 2014 programme, including support programmes developed within the teaching and learning strand of BPIP to assist those schools interested in this exciting initiative, including schemes of work, risk assessments, guidance on roles and responsibilities and tips on how to get the most from this experience for your pupils.

For 2014 primary schools will have the opportunity to take part in the programme sailing out of Hull or for the more adventurous schools, to join Maybe during the West Coast of Scotland legs or sailing through the Caledonian Canal, which includes the beautiful and mysterious Loch Ness. Further information is available via Bradford Schools On Line, enter via “Curriculum and Assessment”, then “PE and School Sport”, then “Primary PE and school sport”.

Maybe Sailing benefits from the support of various sponsors including Associated British Ports, British Waterways Marinas Ltd., British Waterways Canals and Rivers, Hutton Medical Supplies. The largest sponsorship is the generous financial support from Wingglider Ltd. and E P Homes which enables Maybe Sailing to offer bursaries to deserving young people which radically reduces the costs. The normal cost for a 24 hour self –provisioned sail would be £99p.p. but the costs to Bradford Schools through this programme would start at £60 per person – taking account of a £39p.p.n. subsidy from the bursary fund. These bursaries are subject to financial terms and conditions.

An important part of the success of this programme is the opportunity for teaching /school staff to learn the ropes through specially arranged staff inductions during a 24 hour onboard experience. Thanks again to the support of Wingglider Ltd. and E P Homes, Maybe Sailing can offer these inductions at the subsidised student rate. Inductions are available before October half term 2013 and again in March 2014.

Terms and Conditions for the Maybe Sailing Bursary Fund  All 12 places aboard to be paid for (i.e. £720 per 24 hours)  Valid for school-provisioning only (school-provisions for 16 people, including crew).  A Maybe Sailing provisioned package is available at a supplement of £7.50 per person per 24 hours.  Sail date and booking secured only by a non-refundable 20% deposit.  Balance must be paid four weeks prior to the date of sail.
