This Packet Will Allow You to See What Your Child Will Be Learning in Their Class. These

August 2016

Dear Parents:

Choosing a class in Career and Technical Education will be of great benefit to your child. Many of the available careers are technology-based and require at least some basic technology training. The Marion County Career and Technical Education programs – along with the appropriate core courses - will prepare your child to be College and Career Ready. Sixty-five percent of the available jobs require an associates’ degree or advanced training. Students need to explore and choose the best path for them. And, it’s important that you are a part of that process. I encourage you to watch this video, https://player.vimeo.com/video/67277269 .

This packet will allow you to see what your child will be learning in their class. These classes offer hands-on learning experiences on industry-comparable equipment.

Marion County is fortunate to have the programs, the labs/shops and the teachers that are needed to offer these experiences to your child. The Career and Technical Education Department offers programs based on labor market data and the advice of a county-wide Advisory Committee. We strive to make programs available that prepare students for careers in which jobs are available. We also strive to keep the labs, classrooms, and shops for these programs well- equipped and current with industry standards.

Our teachers are well qualified for these positions and dedicated to their students. In addition to teacher license, many of our teachers also hold industry certification in the field in which they are teaching. These teachers work long hours to prepare their labs/shops for learning activities each day. They utilize state curriculum and their own work experiences to give students the skills they need for entry-level employment and/or post-secondary education. CTE teachers use the Competency Attainment Rubric for assessing student mastery of competencies in their CTE courses. This rubric defines for the student the level of performance required for mastery of the skills and content.

In addition to classroom experiences, students are encouraged to participate in the Career and Technical Student Organization that relates to their program. This is a great opportunity for gaining leadership skills. Many students compete both district-wide and state-wide in the skills that are learned in their Career and Technical Education program. Participation in these organizations also provides scholarship opportunities for our students. In addition, there are increasing opportunities for students to participate in field trips and other activities that help them better understand a work environment and to plan their career.

Please work with the Guidance Counselor to help your child determine which technical area will best prepare them for their desired career. All of our Career and Technical Education Programs offer three or more credits. This will give the students the opportunity they need for a focused area of study and for post-secondary education. The Guidance Counselor can assist you and your child in setting up their Program of Study accordingly.

I wish you and your child an enjoyable and successful year in Career and Technical Education. If I can be of service to you, please contact me at 942-3434 or at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Kay H. Light Director of Career and Technical Education Marion County Schools
