Job Summary INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE PROGRAM UCSF is an accredited institution with the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation for Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), a voluntary accreditation organization. The Institutional Animal Care and Use Program (IACUP) is responsible for all compliance related activities surrounding the care and use of animals on this campus. The ethical, regulatory, and policy regulations include the USDA Animal Welfare Act and Regulations (AWAR), the USDA Animal Care Policies, the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, all of which are encompassed in University Policy to ensure the highest standards of animal care and use.

The program includes: Oversight and Administration of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); training programs for investigator and Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) staff; inspections for animal-holding areas and research laboratories to ensure compliance with Federal, state and UCSF regulations and policies; and serves as the University’s contact and liaison with regulatory agencies.

JOB OVERVIEW Under the general direction of the Director, the Training & Compliance Analyst IV works closely with the IACUC, Office of Ethics and Compliance management, Office of Research management, veterinarians and veterinary staff and is directly supervised by the Training and Compliance Analyst V Supervisor. The individual is responsible for the planning, development, implementation and integration of ongoing training programs, including advanced and specialized training in research techniques involving the use of laboratory animals. In addition, the individual assures compliance with applicable Federal and state regulations and University policies and procedures by conducting protocol audits and by performing site inspections to ensure procedures conform to protocols.

Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific area; e.g. veterinary technology, animal health technology as it relates to laboratory animal science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience • Three years of experience working with animals in a research environment • California driver’s license and good driving record. DMV pull notice • Demonstrated prior training experience in academic and/or research setting • Demonstrated experience in working with a diverse population to implement compliance with applicable regulations • Pre-employment health screen and annual follow-up. Participation in department’s occupational health program • Knowledge of federal regulations for the care and use of laboratory animals including regulations affecting the care, importation and shipment of lab animals • Knowledge of computers in order to enter data, create reports, and present summary of laboratory inspections. Position requires report generation, newsletter article preparation, public speaking, formal presentations, and ability to create spreadsheets and use various types of databases • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to compose reports, correspondence, and summaries in a comprehensive and organized manner • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work diplomatically with a wide range of people

Preferred Qualifications • Licensure in Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Technology or AALAS certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist • Previous work experience in a regulatory compliance related role is highly desirable • Experience in public speaking, delivering presentations, or conducting instructional sessions • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
