South Orange-Maplewood School District Board of Education Policy and Monitoring Committee Meeting Notes September 09, 2013 7:00 p.m.

1. Policy review Purpose: To review state mandated and other policy updates for presentation to full Board at the September public meeting.

Reviewed the following policies that align with TeachNJ regulations and suggested minor revisions . Policies will have first reading at September BOE meeting.  Policy 3144.12 Certification of Tenure Charges – Inefficiency  Policy 3144.3 Suspension Upon Certification of Tenure Charges  Policy 3372 Teaching Staff Member Tenure Acquisition  Policy 3373 Tenure Upon Transfer to Promotion  Policy 3374 Tenure Upon Transfer to an Underperforming School  Policy 4124 Employment Contract

2. Review P&M Committee work plan for 2013-14 school year Purpose: To review and finalize the P&M Committee work plan to ensure the committee fulfills its charge.

 The committee charge was updated for the 2013-14 school year and a responsibility related to drafting Board Goals was added.  The committee reviewed and updated the Policy and Monitoring work plan for the 2013- 14 school year

3 Discuss National Board Certification Monitoring report Purpose: Determine if this monitoring report is still necessary and if so, review/confirm the RI.  The NBC monitoring report has been completed for this year. However, since there is no longer a milestone related to NBC In the District Goals, this monitoring report does not need to be produced in future years.  Administration will continue to promote NBC to staff members and monitor their success.  The Superintendent will include a brief summary in his monthly updates at the beginning and end of the school year.

4 Discuss opportunities for Board lobbying efforts Purpose: Identify initiatives that warrant coordinated Board lobbying efforts  Committee recommends that Board members work to increase state funding for SOMSD  Additional lobbying items are still under discussion.

5. Review Board Goals Purpose: Prepare recommendations for Board Goals for 2013-14 focusing on identifying lobbying efforts that would be in the District’s best interest.  Committee updated Board Goals for the 2013-14 school year and forwarded them to the CE&O committee for review of the portion related to Board communication.
