How to use videos in Logger-Pro
Logger Pro is a powerful tool that allows the measurement of lots of real world tools.
One key application is opening files, and importing videos.
To open a file, select the “File” Drop down menu.
It should default to the Logger Pro “Experiments” folder, which was installed when you installed your computer. Scroll down to the “Sample Videos” file for an example. Open “Sample Videos” and then click the “Basketball Shot” Folder
Open the “Basketball Shot” file
You should see the following video appear:
There are a few important buttons. Practice plotting the motion of the basketball. With the video in the beginning frame, select the plotting button and click the top of the basketball. The video will automatically advance with each click. Click the top of the basketball each time until the end of the video.
As you continue you should notice the graph on the left starts gaining red and blue dots. The red dots are your horizontal motion and the blue dots are your vertical motion. The X graph is your horizontal displacement graph.
The Y graph is your vertical displacement graph.
The X velocity graph is your horizontal velocity graph
The Y velocity graph is your vertical velocity graph.
Notice that in the velocity graph, the points move around more, but there are still basic lines. Now let’s try inserting your own video!
On a blank LoggerPro document, click “Insert”->”Movie”
Open a folder where you have placed a movie you’ve recorded. Select the movie and click “Open”
Your movie will appear in the movie window, in whatever size you’ve recorded it in. Now use the plotting buttons to plot your motion, just like with the Basketball video!
Your points will show up on the graph behind the screen. Resize the graph (drag the corner) like you did with the video to make things easier to see! Your video may have some extra motion at the before and after the motion you’re concerned about. It’s up to you if you want to keep that motion in your motion graph.
When you’ve finished, click “File” -> “Save As” and save your logger pro file in a place you can find it again!
