CHANDLER HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA 350 N ARIZONA AVE CHANDLER, AZ 85225 480-766-9685

Expectations for Chandler High School Orchestra Students 2016-17 School Year Director: Mrs. Kennedy

Chandler High School takes pride in being able to offer orchestra classes on this campus. Although I consider participation in instrumental music programs a right of all students, I do expect certain standards of each student enrolled in the orchestra classes:

Expectations for CHS Orchestra Students:  Responsibility  Dependability  Musical Excellence  Dedication

Mature behavior is expected at all times:  Show common courtesy  Respect each other and respect school and personal property  Be on time to class, rehearsals and concerts  Observe rules as outlined by the CUSD District, CHS and Mrs. Kennedy

Pay attention and participate in class activities: (All students must actively participate in class)  Have materials for each class (instrument, rosin, pencil, rock stop, shoulder pad, etc.)  Listen quietly to the instructor  Prepare assignments (Practice Records turned in weekly)  Take care of your equipment (loosen bow, keep rosin wiped off, etc.)  Cell phones, Ipods and electronic devices (except tuners and metronomes) must be stored in the student’s backpack or purse during class

Attendance at Concerts and Special Rehearsals:  Each student is required to attend all concerts and special rehearsals. o Orchestra means teamwork and cannot perform effectively with members missing.  Good communication between teacher, student and parents can prevent misunderstandings.  Exceptions for absences: (A Written note from a parent is required) o Personal illness o Family emergency o A prior commitment (In this case the instructor must be notified ASAP. Please check calendars carefully so there will not be any misunderstandings.)

Equipment (instruments and accessories):  Students are encouraged to purchase and/or rent their own instruments.  Those few students who rent an instrument from school will be responsible for the care, protection and up- keep of the loaned instrument while it is checked out in their name.  Rosin, rock stops and shoulder rests, will be provided by the student.

Uniforms  Concert attire: (I will require all orchestra students to adhere to a strict uniform code for concerts. Please see CHS Schoolwires Website for information on uniforms and where to purchase them.) o Chamber and Symphonic Orchestras use the same uniform  Boys: Tuxedo  Girls: Black long dress o Concert Orchestra uniform is different  Boys: Black dress pants and white dress shirt  Girls: Long black skirt and white long sleeve blouse . Discipline and/or lack of participation:  1st offence – verbal warning  2nd offence – parent contacted  3rd offence – Parent/Teacher conference required

Grades:

Grades will be broken into four areas:  GRADE BREAKDOWN o Daily participation (which also include extra rehearsals and sectionals) o Performances (Concerts) o Playing and written exams o Homework - Practice Records
