What Is an Artist Statement

STUDIO ART FINAL PART 1 DUE IN CLASS WED. May 30th [10 points per day for late work!]

Footwear to Artwork Transformation Select a Shoe/boot/slipper/sandal/sneaker to use for the project. Footwear may be new or used. You may use more than 1 if you like.

Transform the footwear into an artwork: You may photograph it, disassemble it, paint it, mark it, reconfigure it, change its context or materials, combine it with other materials, flatten it, give it a new function. -Material suggestions: Clay, cookies, food, sticks, markers, paper, magazines, wire, paint, stones, leaves, tennis balls, jewelry, bark, hair, glue, records, mesh, plants, fabrics, broken things, mirror, coins, acorns, pencils, doll furniture, string feathers………. -Borrow or sign out materials from the art room if needed. [Do not use: blood, dead animals, other bio-hazards] Additional Option: to actually create and construct a shoe that can be worn.

Write an artist’s statement to go with your work. This will include and explanation of your idea and your process in creating it. You can include other comments about your work as well. Create a case card to use for display: artist’s name and title of work. Details/Criteria on 3rd and 4th pages Artist Statement Requirements- 1 Full Page, Typed, 12 Point Font, Single Spaced

What is an artist statement? An artist statement is an explanation of your work as an artist. It is the what, how, and why of your work. It explains the reasoning behind your art work.

Artist statement content Ask yourself the following questions about your work: What are you trying to express or say in the artwork? What has been your inspiration for your artwork? Why have you made particular creative and construction decisions? Why have you chosen certain materials? Which art elements have you emphasized and how have you incorporated them? First Paragraph Begin with a general statement that is a clear and concise about your work and support that statement with your reasoning. This paragraph should be an overview about the artwork. Discuss what are trying to express, your ideas and inspiration. Second Paragraph Next, go into detail about how you created your artwork based on what you are trying to express. Discuss in detail your creative decisions and material choices. Be specific.

Third Paragraph (3-4 sentences) Finally, sum up the most important points made throughout the previous two paragraphs. Provide a closing statement about your work.

Shoe Rubric 2 Parts, Each Part Worth 100 Points

100 Pts. Art Elements/Construction & Craftsmanship  90-100 pts. Exceptional transformation of shoe. Creative and inventive use of visual ideas. High degree of visual detail. All art elements (line, color, value, texture, etc.) work together to create an excellent sense of visual unity and harmony. Excellent craftsmanship and control of materials. Additional art materials thoughtfully and carefully applied.  80-90 pts. Good transformation of shoe. Creative use of visual ideas. Good attention to detail. Art elements (line, color, value, texture, etc.) work together to create a good sense of visual unity and harmony. Good craftsmanship and control of materials. Good application of additional art materials.  0-75 pts. Inadequate transformation of shoe. Little effort in creative use of visual ideas. Little visual detail evident. Limited use of art elements (line, color, value, texture, etc.) to create a sense of visual unity and harmony. Poor craftsmanship and limited control of materials. Careless application of additional art materials.

100 Pts. Artist Statement and Gallery Card  90-100 pts. Excellent use of art language and terms to clearly describe and define artist’s concepts, ideas and process. Statement exhibits excellent development of all 3 paragraphs, addresses all questions in exceptional detail and meets all artist statement requirements. Gallery card creative and includes all required information.  80-90 pts. Good use of art language and terms to describe and define artist’s concepts, ideas and process. Statement exhibits good development all 3 paragraphs, addresses questions in good detail and meets most of the artist statement requirements. Gallery card included with required information.  0-75 pts. Limited use of art language and terms to describe and define artist’s concepts, ideas and process. Underdeveloped artist statement, lacking details and missing many of the artist statement requirements. Gallery card missing or lacking required information.
