West Titles in Bold-Essential Titles *-Added in 2010 Women’s Studies Core Books commentary

I have spent all summer of 2010 conducting a list checking on the Herman Wells Library’s gender studies collection, matching it with the University of Wisconsin’s Women’s Studies Core Books ACRL/WSS. My assignment was to determine what deficiencies that the current collection had and possibly make recommendations for what books should be included.

There were 54 categories in the Women’s Studies Core Books List. There were 534 titles absent from the Wells collection. In ascending order from least amount of titles missing to greatest, the categories are as follows: History-U.S.-0 HIV/AIDS-0 Labor-0 Language-0 Literature/British-0 Philosophy-0 African Women-1 Science-1 Film/Television Studies-2 History-International-2 Latin-American Women-2 Spirituality-2 Agricultural- Developmental/International-3 Geography/Travel-3 Mass Media-4 Military-4 Antiquity-5 Feminist Movements in the United States-5 South and Southeast Asian Women-5 Theatre-5 Transnational Feminism-5 East Asian Women-6 Feminist Theory-6 Mental Health/Psychology-6 Middle Eastern Women-6 Popular Culture-6 Religion-6 Technology-6 Literature-U.S.-7 Politics-International-7 Politics-U.S.-7 Sexual Abuse-8 Anthropology/Archaeology-9 Family-11 Women of Color-12 Agriculture-U.S.-13 Health-13 Lesbian Studies-13 Girls and Girlhood-14 Law-15 Aging-16 Disabilities-16 Dance-17 Sociology-17 Management-20 Sports-23 Reference-25 Eco-Feminism-30 Music-34 Visual Arts-34 Feminist Pedagogy-38 Education-44

This isn’t an exact indication of the amount of books as compared to the Core Books since the categories have diverse numbers. Education for example has 73 books in the WSCB list while History-U.S. also has 73. However, these books give some indication of the categories at Wells that have deficiencies that could use some new additions to the collections.

There were two other categories worth mentioning on the list, besides the subject categories: Essential Titles and titles that were added to the list in 2010. These were particularly highlighted in my list by bolding the Essential Titles and putting asterisks on the Added in 2010. There were 64 titles from the Essential Titles that are not in the Wells collection. There are 69 items absent from the Added in 2010 list. The category that had the most Essential Titles was Education with 12 and the category with the most titles from the Added in 2010 list was Reference with 10 items. Of the potential items for Wells’ collection, I highly recommend that these should be added.

I detected some patterns by going through the list: Education and Feminist Pedagogy, the two lists with the most absent items paralleled each other since they both dealt with women’s education from primary schooling to higher learning. I would recommend that the Education collection include these perspectives.

Arts and Entertainment had categories with large numbers of absent items, Visual Arts, Music, and Dance in particular. I recommend that these collections should add a gender studies outlook.

While there are a small amount of items missing in the Health categories, such as Aging, Mental Health/Psychology, and Health, many items do overlap on the lists and there should be more emphasis on women’s health. Health science in particular is an ongoing always changing field and no one wants to be kept behind.

While Literature-U.S. has a small amount of items absent from the list, all of the items deal with African- American or Latin-American women writers. This trend was further noted with a large amount of absent Women of Color items as well as in Eastern Asian and Southern and Southeastern Asian Women. Perhaps, the diversity materials should use a second look.
