Wind Speed and Direction If you have a tail wind, a wind that is blowing in the direction that you are going, you add to your speed. If you are going into a headwind you must subtract from your speed. For example, if you are heading into an easterly direction and the winds are coming from the west, northwest, or southwest, you may add mph to your speed. However, if the winds are coming from the east, northeast, or southeast, you must subtract the mph from your speed. Remember, winds are named for the direction from which they are coming, NOT the direction in which they are blowing! Use the following chart to add or subtract miles traveled per hour: *Remember you are traveling 2 MPH to Add or Subtract per hours, not just one. Wind Speed mile Ex) If I am traveling the direction 0-10 0 the wind is blowing at 12 mph during the thunderstorm, the winds 11-20 5 will help push me and I will add 5 21-30 10 mph for each mile traveled. 31-40 15 50 mph + (5 x 2) = 60 miles in 2 41+ 20 hrs

Things to Remember: - On each two hour leg of the journey you can decide the route you want to take by checking the weather at the next city. You might also want to look at the forecast for cities along your proposed route. You may want to change your mind. - The distance you travel on each leg of the journey is determined by where you are at the time. - If you can not find the city on the Weather Channel that is at the end of your two hour distance, find a city nearby and check the weather. - On your map, 2.54 cm equals 90 miles. You must know this to figure out how far to move your car on the map. Example- You have traveled 60 miles.

2.54 cm = how many cm your car moves 90 miles 60 miles First cross multiply the fractions 2.54 x 60 = 152.4 Then do 152.4 / 90 = 1.69 cm * So if I travel 60 miles, my car moves 1.69 cm on the map.
