Where to build a new seaside resort?
There are four sites being considered for a new resort:
1 – The Marloes, Pembrokeshire 2 – Happisburgh, Norfolk 3 – Porlock Bay, Somerset 4 – Winchelsea, Sussex
The sites are shown in the map below, which also shows the fetch of the waves, and so how big the waves are and how much erosion could take place. The first thing to consider is how safe the resort will be from future sea level rise. The perfect site should not be affected by future changes in sea level. The red areas on the map below show where sea level is likely to rise in the future. You now need to consider how safe each site is. The perfect site should be safe from hazards such as cliffs falling. You should look at the fetch to give you an indication of erosion and the OS maps below will show you if there are steep cliffs where rock falls might occur or sea defences to protect from flooding.

The next thing to consider is landscape, or what the site looks like. The site should have good sea views and attractive coastal scenery. You can find out what the sites look like using the OS maps and Google.
Environmental impact means that the new resort should not have a harmful effect on the local environment. You should check the OS maps for things like nature reserves.
The last thing to consider is attractions. Whilst the resort will build its own accommodation and provide some entertainment, holidaymakers will want to have things to do and places to go in the local area. The resort will have entertainment at night open to the public, you might want to consider if there are campsites or villages nearby, as these people might use the entertainment.
