The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne Honors English 10 Scarlet Letters

This is your chance to play the Puritan! That’s right, you get to pass judgment and assign the scarlet letter of sin that three different people must wear. No, not just anyone. You will select one of each: 1. A notorious person from history (see list on back or one of your own choosing); 2. Any other fictional character in any medium (so, books, television, movies, etc.); 3. Another character(s) in the novel.

For each of these people, you will: a. Select the appropriate letter of sin (like “M” for “murderer”) and decorate it appropriately like Hester decorated hers. b. Describe the person or character, so for #1 above, you’ll need to do some minor research. c. Explain their letter, giving reasons and specific examples as to how this is the most appropriate letter and why they should be forced to wear it for everyone to see. d. Compare the character and/or their sin to Hester Prynne. Infamous People
