Investigating Our Food

Focus: From start to finish, the food we put into our own digestive systems go through an intense process in terms of research, preparation, harvest, processing, preserving, packaging, shipping, marketing, consumption, and disposal. In this project you will consider everything needed to raise/produce that food and the impact it has on you and the environment.

Process: There are several steps you will need to go through in terms of completing this project:

1) Pick a food item from the list below OR consult your teacher if you have another product in mind. 2) Research the Key Questions below to gain a full understanding of your grocery item. 3) Publish your findings in a Story Map using ArcGIS below. 4) Identify the future of this product in terms of environmental impact it has, health implications we should consider and indicate any possible changes that you think should be made.

Key Questions: 1) What research is involved to maximize production of this item? Consider both the ingredients and the manufacturing process. 2) How are all the ‘materials’ harvested and prepared? Are there typically herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, etc used? Where does this take place? 3) How are the ingredients transformed and processed? Where does this take place? Are there preservatives involved? 4) What packaging and shipping is needed? 5) How are the products marketed to the consumer? Do companies advertise the whole product accurately? 6) How and where do we consume this product? Are there health implications or benefits? Name: ______Score:______

7) How is the product or the remnants of it disposed of? Be sure to consider any packaging that might be included.
