The young Fannie graduated from Booker T. 26 Washington High School in 1934 and earned her bachelor’s degree 27 at Allen University (1938) and her master’s degree at South 28 Carolina State University (1953). Further study followed at 29 Columbia University in New York, North Carolina College in 30 Durham, and Fisk University in Nashville; and 31 32 Whereas, Mrs. Adams began her professional career in 1938 as a 33 teacher at Booker T. Washington Heights Elementary School (later 34 Sarah Nance Elementary and now WatkinsNance Elementary), 35 where she taught third grade until 1943. She went on to teach 36 English and social studies at Booker T. Washington High School 37 and continued her service there as a teacher, guidance counselor, 38 assistant principal, and acting principal until the school closed in 39 1974. She then served as assistant principal at A.C. Flora High 40 School until she retired in 1979. During her more than forty years 41 in Richland County School District One, she taught, guided, and 42 befriended hundreds of students and scores of her fellow teachers.

[5471] 2 1 The people whose lives she touched are far too numerous to count. 2 The Booker T. Washington Foundation established the Fannie 3 Phelps Adams Scholarship in her honor in 1986; and 4 5 Whereas, a guiding light, under God, to her family, friends, 6 church, community, and students, Fannie Adams believed strongly 7 in personal involvement with her community, and her convictions 8 led her to serve that community in several capacities. These 9 include service as a lifetime member of St. James AME Church, 10 where she was a trustee, class leader, member of the church school 11 and Bible study groups, and 1975 Mother of the Year. In addition, 12 she received the Heritage Award and Meritorious Membership 13 Award, and in 2007 she was honored as the church’s oldest living 14 member. The Presbyterian Women of Northminster Presbyterian 15 Church recognized Mrs. Adams as a Woman of Faith. Her many 16 other honors include awards from the Richland County Education 17 Association, South Carolina Education Association, and National 18 Education Association; and 19 20 Whereas, Mrs. Adams was founder of the Palmetto Cemetery 21 Association and director of the Wheeler Hill Neighborhood 22 Association and had been a member of the Columbia Branch of the 23 National Association of University Women since 1945 and of the 24 Beta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority since 1944. She was a 25 former board member for Palmetto Richland Hospital, a charter 26 member of Palmetto Richland Children’s Hospital, a volunteer 27 with the Senior Citizen Food CoOp, and a member of the NAACP; 28 and 29 30 Whereas, having been preceded in death by her beloved husband, 31 David King Adams, Fannie Phelps Adams leaves to cherish her 32 memory a daughter, Mary Suzette AdamsJenkins; a grandson, 33 David Edward Adams; two greatgrandchildren, Davion and 34 Diamond Adams; and a host of other family members and friends. 35 She will be missed by all who had the inestimable privilege of 36 knowing her. Now, therefore, 37 38 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 39 40 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 41 by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of 42 Fannie Phelps Adams of Columbia and extend the deepest 43 sympathy to her family and many friends.
