Public Meeting/Hearing on Proposed Delayed Harvest Regulations

Main Line Fly Tyers April, 2003

This month’s meeting of the Main Line Fly Tyers will be held at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education* on Thursday, April 17th, starting at 7:30pm.

April Meeting. This month Bill Diana will present a program entitled "Fly Fishing some of the West's Blue Ribbon Streams"

Bill’s presentation to The Main Line Fly Tyers will cover his 2002 trips to the Provo River, Utah; Henry's Fork, Idaho; and the Madison and Big Horn Rivers in Montana. He has fished these rivers for many years and over this time has seen the crowds radically increase in intensity, and, the cost of rental craft more than double. As a result, he decided to buy pontoon boats to get away from the crowds on the Madison and Big Horn Rivers, as well as to keep the trip costs to a minimum. The boats that he purchased proved to be fantastic and they easily handled the roughest water. Bill got to fish spots on the Madison, and on the Big Horn that few anglers ever see. The boats allowed him to glide into shallow areas without spooking huge Rainbows that were surface feeding on Black Midges and Blue Wing Olives. All of this will be shown in the slide show.

Last month Annual “Opening Day “ meeting. The march meeting focused on preparing for the opening of the Pennsylvania Trout season on April 12th. It was an in-house meeting with members presenting information on tying spring patterns, location of and directions to local “hot” streams and presentations on fishing in Penna.

The Resica Fishing Day was a huge success. About 35 people attended. The weather was overcast, cold, with some occasional light drizzle. Water temp was about 40 degrees. In essence, perfect early spring fishing weather.

Don Douple presented nymphing techniques with a live follow-up on stream. Dave and Sam lead a casting class, then we broke for lunch. After lunch Dave continued the day's activities with a 'fishing the wet fly' demo. Then Sam demonstrated the fine art of dry fly fishing. The instructional part of the day ended about 2:30 and members took to the stream to try their newly learned skills. One member was so determined to catch a fish he forsook his rod and took a swim attempting to catch the elusive trout. Bob Gibala took the first fish of the day - way to go Bob - and Jeff Hoskins was spotted releasing a fish around the bend. The club would like to thank all the members who contributed to making the day a success. Both the instruction and the food were excellent.

Announcements

Club Library. The club library has obtained several thousand dollars worth of fishing books from Tom Lennon’s estate. Many of these books are signed first editions and will be very valuable additions to the club. However, since we are getting near the end of the meeting season the new books won’t be made available for loan until next September.

A note from the MLFT Secretary.
