Purpose: This Document Provides a Quick Overview of the Standalone Virtis Version 6

USING VIRTIS VERSION 6.1 or 6.2 April 5, 2010

NOTE: All references to Virtis 6.1 are valid for Virtis 6.2

Purpose: This document provides a quick overview of the standalone Virtis Version 6.1. Access and login procedure are described as well as information regarding the data added to the local server.

Login: Once the standalone version of Virtis 6.1 has been installed on your PC or laptop you will see three separate icons on your desktop.

The login screen is shown below. The screen shows the Data Source as Virtis61_SQLServer. Which should be the Data Source used for local work.

If Virtis61_SQLServer does not appear in the Data Source textbox, click on the button with three dots located to the right of the Data Source textbox. This will bring up the ODBC Select Data Source window. Click on the System DSN tab at the top, then scroll down and select the Virtis61_SQLServer entry. Click on OK to add the database to the Data Source textbox.

Return to the login screen. The username for the local database is virtis and the Password is virtis. The syntax is crucial so be sure to use all lower case.

When you have log in for the first time there will be 24 example files in the database. It is recommeded that these files be kept and not deleted.

General Operation: Virtis 6.1 functions in the same manner as the production version 5.6. The primary difference is that you have full control over the local database. Files can be imported and exported if necessary to share them with others having the standalone database.

Cautions: 1. The use of standalone local databases comes with inherent problems. The setup is being provided to you only because your supervisor requested it be installed for a particular project or reason. 2. Please use the five digit Federal Structure number for the Bridge ID and Bridge Name. This is in accordance with the Virtis Load Rating project. 3. Any new files created or imported into the local database will be local only and will not be directly available to other users. 4. If you are working locally in 6.1 you will not be able to access the 5.6 production database unless you follow the instructions provided in the BWVersionCHG2010.doc.

Page 3 of 4 USING VIRTIS VERSION 6.1 or 6.2 April 5, 2010 5. Version 6.1 files CANNOT be exported and imported into version 5.6. Compatability is only forward to a higher version. 6. Any special beams, trucks or any other library data added locally WILL NOT be available in the production database. It is therefore reccommended that additions to the library be avoided. 7. Any new files that need to be saved for addition to the planned version 6.1 production database should be exported and sent to Doug Horton for addition to the local 6.1 database that will be migrated to the production database.

Assistance: Direct all questions regarding the use of the standalone version 6.1 to Doug Horton (804-786-1315) ([email protected] )
