Course Description and Purpose English II will broaden and deepen the skills learned in the previous year. Throughout English II, students are again taught to use writing as a means of thinking and learning across the curriculum. Excerpts of high-quality literature will serve as models to teach reading, writing, usage, and mechanics. Additionally, students will be exposed to whole texts and excerpts from newspapers, magazines, and research material. Open-ended writing activities, performance assessments, and cooperative learning situations are also part of the curriculum. Emphasis is given to critical analysis and interpretation of literature. Students are asked to write frequently and creatively. The study of grammar, spelling, and usage is also incorporated into classroom studies. Vocabulary studies and novel studies are emphasized. Night, Animal Farm, and Julius Caesar are among the required units of study. ______

General Course Goals: • Students will develop the ability to demonstrate knowledge of characters, action, structure, and language. • Students will develop the ability to analyze figurative language such as imagery, symbolism, and tone in diverse literary works. • Students will develop the ability to examine literary works in their proper historical contexts and draw connections to personal experiences. • Students will develop skills in composition including the use of a wide-ranging vocabulary, varied sentence structure, and logical organization. • Students will analyze poetry giving consideration to structure, style, and content. • Students will successfully complete an argumentative essay. • Students will successfully complete a personal narrative, literary writing or personal essay.

Required Course Writing Throughout the school year, students will be required to complete two writing pieces for the school year. For one piece, students will be able to choose between a personal narrative, literary piece or personal essay. The second required writing is an argumentative essay. Failure to complete either of these writings will result in failure of the class. ______

Grading Procedure and Assessment Points will be given for class work and homework. The following ten point grading scale will be used for averaging grades: 90 – 100 = A 80 – 89 = B 70 – 79 = C 60 – 69 = D 0 – 59 = F

Quizzes and multiple forms of assessment will occur throughout each grading period. In addition, students will have unit assessments at the close of each grading quarter. ______

Classroom Expectations One of the main goals of my classroom is to provide a positive atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Each member of my class plays a vital role in the achievement of this goal. Mutual respect for one another must remain a priority. Course Units
