PGA Sports Academy Powered by UnitedHealthcare Youth Clinic to Host More Than 100 Junior Golfers From Local Organizations at City of Charleston Golf Course Sunday

As part of its ongoing mission to support the next generation of golfers, The PGA of America will host a PGA Sports Academy powered by UnitedHealthcare Youth Clinic for more than 100 young golfers from nearly 15 local organizations Sunday (Aug. 5), at the City of Charleston Golf Course. The event is part of the 94th PGA Championship held at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Aug. 6-12. The PGA Sports Academy is designed to help kids learn and practice the skills needed to play golf, while having fun in the process. WHEN:  Sunday, Aug. 5 • 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.  2 p.m. – PGA of America President Allen Wronowski welcomes junior golfers  2:10 p.m. – Dennis Walters Show  2:40 p.m. – Long Drive Exhibition, Maurice Allen – Captain of the U.S. Long Drive team  3:00 p.m. – Juniors rotate through PGA Sports Academy fitness stations and other fun game stations  4:40 p.m. – Cookout for attendees WHERE:  City of Charleston Golf Course, 2110 Maybank Highway, Charleston, S.C. 29412; 843.795.6517 WHO: (All are available for media interviews)  Allen Wronowski, PGA, President, The PGA of America  Mike Casto, PGA, Carolinas Section President  Ron Schmid, PGA, Carolinas Section Executive Director  Earnie Ellison, Director of Business and Community Relations, The PGA of America  Bob Baldassari, PGA, Senior Director, Player Development, The PGA of America  Dennis Walters, PGA Honorary Member  Marshall Ormand, PGA, Head Golf Professional at City of Charleston Golf Course  PGA Professionals from the Carolinas PGA Section  Maurice Allen, Captain of the U.S. Long Drive team NOTES:  Junior participants in Sunday’s PGA Sports Academy have been invited by charitable organizations supported by The PGA of America through the PGA Community Relations Outreach Program.  Carolinas PGA Section PGA Professionals will be on hand to provide instruction as the junior golfers rotate through PGA Sports Academy Fitness and Sports stations as well as other fun game stations.  As part of the event, PGA Honorary Member Dennis Walters will perform a trick-shot show during which he executes several trick shots from unusual lies, while incorporating comedy and audience interaction from his wheelchair. Walters’ dream of playing on the PGA Tour was destroyed after an accident in 1974 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Walters is one of only 11 honorary members of The PGA of America.  Maurice Allen is one of the world’s longest drive hitters, setting the World record for fastest club head speed at the PGA Merchandise Show in 2011. Allen graduated from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee with a B.S. in Biology.  The PGA Sports Academy focuses on five core elements aimed at mental and physical youth development, including golf skills, fitness and nutrition, assessments, rules and sportsmanship, and on-course activities.
