CALVARY BAPTIST CHRISTIAN ACADEMY SENIOR AUSTIN CALDWELL WINS ELEVENTH ANNUAL CHANNELLOCK® SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST

MEADVILLE, Pa. (May 15, 2013) – Calvary Baptist Christian Academy senior Austin Caldwell has won the eleventh annual Channellock Inc., Senior Scholarship Essay Contest. Finishing in second place was Conneaut Area Senior High School senior Loriann Vernier and third place went to Alexander Bakus of Maplewood High School.

For submitting the winning essay, Caldwell will receive a $2,000 scholarship, Vernier will receive $750 and Bakus will receive $250. Award checks will be mailed directly to the students’ educational institutions at the beginning of the school year with the stipulation that the funds be used for their educational expenses.

The winning students were recognized during a presentation at Channellock Inc., in Meadville, Pa. Bill DeArment, president and CEO of CHANNELLOCK®, presented the winners with a certificate of commendation recognizing their achievements and a pair CHANNELLOCK® pliers, laser engraved with each student’s name and graduation year.

The topic of this year’s essay followed the question: Due to limited tax revenue (no new taxes) where would we make cuts to balance the federal budget?

Students were asked to write a 500 – 1000 word essay detailing their opinion on the topic, and supporting their arguments. The CHANNELLOCK® Scholarship Review Committee then read and scored each of the 19 entries received based on adherence to the theme, research/argument support and overall presentation.

“Each year our committee strives to pick a topic that challenges the students to research and form opinions about issues that will have an impact on them,” said Marc Johnston, director of workforce development at Channellock Inc. “Balancing the budget is something that will affect many generations to come and getting them to start thinking about these issues and what can be done to change them is something they will need in the future.”

The Channellock Inc., Senior Scholarship Essay Contest is made available annually to all Crawford County high school students enrolled, or planning to enroll, in any form of post-secondary education following high school. The post-secondary schooling can be at any institution — college, university, trade school or technical school.
