2013 CIRU Workshop for K-12 Chinese Language Teachers

“The Common Core and Curriculum Design for K-12 Chinese Language Programs”

Friday, August 30, 2013, 8:00 am-6:00 pm 43 College Ave, New Brunswick, NJ Scott Hall 201

This year’s Chinese language teacher training workshop explores the different ways in which the teaching of world languages, including Chinese, is impacted by the adoption and implementation of the Common Core Standards in New Jersey’s K-12 public schools. Ms. Cheri Quinlan, World Languages Coordinator at the New Jersey Department of Education, will provide an introduction to the common core state standards movement and outline how the teaching of world languages can support the goals featured in the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (ELA). Prof. Dongdong Chen, Seton Hall University, will talk about recent developments in curriculum design for K- 16 Chinese language programs. Workshop participants will be given the opportunity to engage in same hands-on training and familiarize themselves with the many new relevant resources that are available on the NJDOE’s Core Curriculum Content Standards (CCCS) web page. It is hoped that participants take away from this workshop various ideas and strategies as to how they can make the teaching of world languages into an integral part of the overall K-12 curriculum.
