Paraparaumu College Level 1 Senior PE UNIT TITLE: Athletics Pentathlon

CURRICULUM LEVEL: 6 DURATION: 4 weeks

Introduction This activity is based around an athletics module in which students are required to perform in five events. The five events must include a run, a throw and a jump, plus any two others. This provides the opportunity for students to explore their strengths and weaknesses in a broad range of events.

In demonstrating ‘ quality movement’ (achievement standard Physical Education 1.3), students will be rewarded for demonstrating their athletic strengths over the five events. This will be objectively measured for each event using the Athletics New Zealand ‘Five Star Award Scheme’.

1 Teacher Guidelines The following guidelines are supplied to enable teachers to carry out valid and consistent assessment using this internal assessment resource.

Evidence for achievement standard Physical Education 1.3 ‘Demonstrate quality movement in the performance of a physical activity’ will be provided concurrently through assessing the quality of performance.

Context/setting: This activity is based around an athletics module in which students are required to perform in five events.

The performance and points required to achieve are judged to be at a basic level and appropriate to the activity. Technique is acknowledged in this activity as an important influencing factor on performance.

Conditions: There are Two tasks involved in this activity – see student instructions for a break down of what these tasks involve. All tasks are to be handed in.

Note: 1. To make this activity manageable, working in groups is encouraged.

2. Accuracy is essential in measuring and recording results. Students will need instructions and training on being a peer ‘official’. The teacher will need to oversee all events to confirm that the results recorded for assessment by the officials are fair and consistent.

3. The student’s best performances from the pre-test or final pentathlon or any other performance verified by the teacher (e.g. school athletic sports) can be used for assessment in Task 2 (Note: equity of opportunity has to be considered). The emphasis is on the student’s best performance for ‘demonstrating quality movement’ and not necessarily a performance under the pressures of a competition. A system (e.g. a log-book) will need to be established for students to keep track of, and teachers to verify (e.g. by signing), other performances.

2 Resource requirements:  Sufficient athletics equipment and facilities  ‘Five Star Award Scheme’ with scoring tables and recording sheets.1  Other resources, all available through Athletics NZ2:  Basic Athletics (coaching manual - covers all events, recommended for all our intro/L1 coaches)  KiwiSport Run-Jump-Throw manual (excellent skill teaching activities for beginners)

 Extra Resources  British publications (event specific - used as text for New Zealand Level 2 coaching courses) are available on: - Sprints & Relays -Shot Put - Discus -Javelin - Hammer -Combined Events - Training Theory -Strength Training - Mobility Training -Hurdling - Endurance Running Events - High Jump - Race Walking -Pole Vault - Long Jump -Triple Jump

 A video camera would be useful, both for a student to observe their own performance and for verification of ‘officials’ judgements.

Read through all the information given to you before starting this assessment activity. Make sure that you understand what you are being asked to do. Ensure that you know what level of performance will be required to obtain a credit, merit or excellence grade for each achievement standard.

This activity has two tasks: Task 1: Involves, pre-testing your ability by measuring performance in a variety of athletic events.

You must include one running, throwing and jumping event and any other two events.

6 periods will be used to train and improve performances

Task 2: Involves, the final performance in your chosen events using trained peers and/or teacher(s) as officials. From these results, your best performance should be decided.

6 Task 1 – Selecting your events for a Pentathlon

Participate in a range of athletics events and record your performance in the chart below. Use a Five Star Athletics Scoring Table to find the points you scored for each event.

Event Pretest Five Star Performance Points

Select five events for your pentathlon. These events must include one running, one throwing and one jumping event, plus any two others. Circle or highlight your chosen run, throw and jump that you will develop in Tasks 2 and 3. Refer to the scoring table in Task 3 to see an indication of your current performance grade.

The events for my pentathlon are:

1. 2.

3. 4.

5.

7 Task 2 - Athletics Pentathlon Event (Official Results)

Once you have completed your final performance after practice, use the table below to record your performances before and after practice. Select your best performance in each event and use the Five Star Points system, to record your points. Your best performance could be from task 1, the final performance, or any other performance verified by your teacher.
