2 About the UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disability (UKSA)

The UK Sports Association occupies a unique space in the sports industry. We are the only organisation in the UK that works exclusively with athletes with learning disability in high performance/elite sport. We are the only organisation with the responsibility for classification of athletes with learning disability in performance sport enabling them to progress to national and international competition. We are a member of the British Paralympic Association and the official GB member of Inas – the International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Disability. Put simply, without UKSA and the service it provides athletes with learning disability cannot progress along the elite performance sport pathway reaching international competition, the Inas Global Games and ultimately the Paralympic Games.

UKSA has four member organisations. These are Scottish Disability Sport, Welsh Sports Association for People with Learning Disability, Disability Sports Northern Ireland and Mencap Sport in England.

The Board of Directors is made up of up to 2 trustees/directors from each of these organisations. In the case of Wales both representatives are also trustees or lead officers in Disability Sport Wales. In the case of England, there is one member from Mencap and another from the English Federation of Disability Sport.

Our Vision

UKSA believes that every person with a learning disability should have the same opportunities in sport as non-disabled people. Our vision is a society that enables people with learning disability to excel and achieve their full potential in the sport of their choice.

UKSA’s focus is on performance which includes strengthening pathways, collaborative working, the pursuit of excellence, influencing policy, advocating change and challenging outdated approaches. This unilateral approach ultimately ensures that athletes who demonstrate the ability have the opportunity to compete at an elite level.

Our Mission

UKSA promotes, facilitates and supports talented sports people with learning disability in the UK to train, compete and excel in national and international sport.

In order to achieve this, UKSA works with its four member organisations, together with the four pan disability Home Country Organisations, all of whom share the values that underpin the UKSA mission. Equally UKSA works with the British Paralympic Association, Sports Governing Bodies, other disability organisations as well as other key partners including UK Sport.

UKSA encourages and supports the development of sustainable, integrated performance led sport and believes that a by product of its work is sport being used to advance athletes education, training, social development and life skills all of which are fundamentals for athletes with learning disability to succeed in elite sport and reach the ultimate goal of Global Games and Paralympic success.

UKSA promotes its vision, mission and values internationally ensuring work continues on the eligibility and classification system that underpins elite performance sport for people with learning disability, not just in the UK but worldwide. UKSA uses its expertise, sports knowledge and good practice to influence development leading the way and setting the scene through its international post holders, all of whom occupy the most significant positions in Inas and its relationships with the International Paralympic Committee, International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and other international sports.

3 UKSA’s target sports are athletics, swimming and table tennis, with an additional focus on rowing and basketball as potential additional Paralympic sports. Any other sport which develops the potential to become a Paralympic sport for people with a learning disability in the future will automatically be included in UKSA’s remit.

UKSA works with other non-Paralympic Sports too, including for example football, tennis and cricket, amongst others. Some have aspirations for Paralympic inclusion for athletes with learning disability, others have a strong international programme in their own right. Whatever the sports position, UKSA works with that sport to promote inclusion and enable athletes with learning disability to reach the highest levels of excellence and recognition.

What we do

UKSA:

 delivers and develops a credible, robust and professional eligibility and classification system for talented athletes with learning disability across the UK  supports the building and delivery of the best prepared talented athlete with learning disability to the Paralympic Games and the Inas Global Games  influences, leads and advocates policy and good practice on behalf of sport for people with learning disability, engaging stakeholders and decision makers in the UK and internationally and to promote awareness of elite British athletes  changes attitudes towards people with learning disability in sport and also people with learning disability’s attitudes to elite performance sport

Athletes with learning disability being re-included in the London 2012 Paralympic Games sees a watershed moment for sport for people with learning disability, the UK Sports Association and its members from what has been a tumultuous past. The UK Sports Association led a campaign in the UK following the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games which resulted in the this successful re-inclusion.

With this line being drawn in the sand, the opportunity to re-invigorate, motivate and strengthen sport for people with learning disability has never been more accessible or tantalising in prospect. The route is clear now to ensure the focus is on strengthening pathways, supporting NGB’s, eligibility, classification, nurturing talent and ultimately producing Paralympians and elite athletes for 2016 and beyond.

The UK Sports Association’s role in this process is vital. UKSA has demonstrated its commitment, approach and ability to deliver upon its pledges to not only support NGB’s, but importantly support elite athlete development, transition to NGB Squads creating strong, confident, medal potential athletes for the future. As part of this process, UKSA has developed and established strong partnerships, facilitated others, connected pathways leading to enhanced athletes performances. UKSA has also developed a sound and robust process to manage eligibility and classification of athletes in the UK, through direct delivery of this service as well as ensuring that the international scientific process, as well as the political relationships between INAS and IPC who are leading the Paralympic classification, is led by credible and well respected British advocates.

With the inception of our exciting new Big Lottery Funded Project, My Sport, My Voice! UKSA is beginning the next stage of its evolution by recruiting a new Project Team.

4 About ‘My Sport, My Voice!’

We are pleased to announce the launch of ‘My Sport, My Voice!’, a brand new Athlete Ambassador project to commence in April 2014. This is an exciting new venture for the UK Sports Association and the successful candidate will be pivotal in shaping and driving the success of this work.

The ‘My Sport, My Voice!’ project is a two year athlete ambassador project funded by Big Lottery which will seek to heighten awareness around learning disability, improve the UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disability (UKSA) strategic approach to learning disability initiatives in the future, and change perceptions about what people with learning disability can achieve.

It will do this by using 12 Athlete Ambassadors and 24 supporting athletes. The 12 Ambassadors will take part in concentrated skills development and training to help co-deliver workshops raising awareness and guiding delegates on how to work with people who have a learning disability. This workshop activity will be preceded by tailored media activity, which will be designed to raise interest and make the general public aware of the stories behind the Ambassadors. The UKSA will use the expertise of their 4 main national partner bodies; the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), Scottish Disability Sport (SDS), Disability Sport Northern Ireland (DSNI) and Disability Sport Wales (DSW) to put together a media plan which will be most relevant for the area of UK they are operating in.

UKSA will also develop a communications toolkit which will be able to be used as a framework to guide organisations and add to the understanding of working with people with learning disability. This will be a resource which is a direct result of the project, and its purpose will be to inform delivery and policy not only just across the UKSA but also many other organisations.

For more information on the ‘My Sport, My Voice’ project, please contact the UK Sports Association.
