Fifth Grade Social Studies s1

2011-2012 Literature Fair Fifth Grade Fantasy/Science Fiction

Dear Fifth Grader,

This year Fifth Grade will participate in the school’s Literature Fair. All students are expected to participate. Each Literature Fair project will count as the completion of a book report (a test grade in Reading). All projects will be displayed during Lutheran Schools Week Open House in March. We will invite you and your families to come out and see all of our creative reporting at that time.

The Fifth Grade theme this year is Fantasy/Science Fiction. You are required to select three books from either of these genres, and you will complete one project per book. All books must be approved by me. No more than three students in our class may read the same book. You may find these books at the school library, at a public library, at a bookstore, etc. You must select books you have never before read.

Due dates, along with their project types, are:

Friday, December 16 Diorama Friday, January 27 Poster Friday, February 24 Multimedia Project

You are expected to keep your designated book with you so you can read it at home and during free time at school. You should keep this packet of information in the Reading section in your binder so you have it with you for reference when you are at school and at home. You should complete the projects independently at home, although you may need to ask your parents to help you get any needed supplies and to proofread your work.

Details about these projects, the book selection form, and a Fantasy Book List are attached. Select your three books and present them to me before or on the deadline on the Book Selection Form.

Please contact me if you have any questions. I hope you have fun reading new books and creatively reporting!

Enjoy reading, work hard, have fun, and complete well-done projects!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kampia

Each project will be evaluated on the following criteria:  Did you follow the directions for the project?

1  Did you compose (you may write in print or cursive, or you may type in an easily readable font of your choice) all required words, summaries, and reviews accurately, neatly and completely?  Did you create all artwork neatly?

Diorama You are to select a favorite scene from the first book and present it in a diorama.  Make a scene in a box that stands on its side. A shoebox is perfect for this. The scene is to be created with objects you make. No toys or store-made crafts can be used. You may use craft sticks, clay, paper, or other media to construct your presentation.  Write a report (handwritten on loose leaf or typewritten on 8.5”x11” paper) containing two paragraphs (subject = Reading; assignment title = Diorama Report): o In the first, inform the reader of the book title, author, illustrator (if there is one), and a short summary of the story (5-10 sentences). This summary should discuss the story's setting, characters, conflict (problem), rising action, climax, and resolution. o In the second, explain in a 5-10 sentence paragraph why you did or did not like the book.

Poster You will create a poster for the second book you read. The poster must be 12”x18” and must include:  the title, author, and illustrator (if there is one).  an illustration to represent the book. Draw an illustration and use different types of media to color in the illustration (i.e. paints, pastels, colored paper, fabric, tissue paper, crayons, markers, etc.).  Write a report (handwritten on loose leaf or typewritten on 8.5”x11” paper) containing two paragraphs (subject = Reading; assignment title = Poster Report): o In the first, inform the reader of the book title, author, illustrator (if there is one), and a short summary of the story (5-10 sentences). This summary should discuss the story's setting, characters, conflict (problem), rising action, climax, and resolution. o In the second, explain in a 5-10 sentence paragraph why you did or did not like the book.
