Board Minutes April 29, 2009 Page 1 of 2 Minutes of Special Board Meeting of April 29, 2009 President Greg Hanon called the Special April 29 meeting of the Board of Directors of Sumner School District No. 320 to order at 6:02 p.m. Present: Greg Hanon, Mike Pavlik, Sherm Voiles, Rick Hendricks, Jeff DeMarre Dr. Gil Mendoza, Superintendent; Craig Spencer, Assistant Superintendent; Debra Barlow, Executive Director, Human Resources; Chris Wick, Executive Director, Teaching & Learning; Deb Campbell, Executive Director, Business Services; Ann Cook, Director, Communications; Erin LaVerdiere, Director, Professional Development; Susie Lynch, Director, Research & Assessment; Sandee Chittenden, Director, Finance; Tim Thomsen, Director, Athletics; Troy Whitten, Director, Transportation; Keoni Smith, Co-Director, Special Services; Steve Fulkerson, Co-Principal, Lakeridge Middle; Steve Sjolund, Co-Principal, Sumner Middle; Serena Gregerson, Director, Human Resources; Becky Giles, Coordinator, Community Rec. & Education; Kandy Rose, SEA President; Sarah Briehl, Director, CTE; Marilee Hill-Anderson, Director, STARR Project; Val Thomas, Teacher, Victor Falls Elementary; Mandy Jowett, Recording Secretary. Visitors: 0 Flag Salute Approval of Agenda Moved by Mike Pavlik that the Board approve the agenda and supplemental agenda as presented: Seconded by Sherm Voiles. Motion unanimously carried. Report 2009-10 Budget Development Business Services Executive Director Debbie Campbell presented a revised revenue forecast, which reflected action taken by the State Legislature. She detailed budget comparisons and revenue projections for 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11, and reviewed reductions presented on April 15. Athletic Director Tim Thomsen presented expenditure reductions for District athletics and extra-curricular activities. And Human Resources Executive Director Deb Barlow summarized reductions in staff FTE through attrition, reduction of time-limited employees and the reorganization of assignments. She also thanked labor groups for their generosity with voluntary reductions and administrators for their willingness to take on “extra” tasks.

Board members thanked the District’s Budget Development Committee for their work and the Administration for their balanced approach and continued support of teaching and learning.

Superintendent Mendoza said there are still many difficult decisions ahead but that the collaborative work by staff at every level will continue and together we can look for opportunities to strengthen programs and to focus on our core values despite the current challenges.

New Business Resolution No. 23/08-09: 2009-10 Proposed Program / Service Reductions Moved by Jeff DeMarre that the Board approve Resolution No. 23/08-09: proposed program/service reductions for the 2009-2010 school year as presented: Seconded by Sherm Voiles. Discussion ensued. There were questions from the Board regarding the resolution and clarification. Motion passed 4 to 1.

Adjournment Moved by Mike Pavlik that the meeting be adjourned: Seconded by Sherm Voiles. Motion unanimously carried. Meeting adjourned: 8:04 p.m.
