1. What does the author mean when he says that most people think of a student as an “animate sausage casing”?
2. Do you think it’s necessary for teachers to think of students as “sausages” at least sometimes? Why or why not?
3. What did the college student mean when he said, “I spend so much time studying that I don’t have a chance to learn anything”? Do you ever feel that way, too? When?
4. In your experience as a student, have you more often been treated like an “oyster” or a “sausage”? Why do you think so?
5. Write your own short “reaction” to this essay. Write one paragraph of at least 5 sentences. (Tell what you liked/disliked, agreed/disagreed with, how you felt after you read the essay, etc.)
