Course Objectives: ✓ Gain proficiency in developing news judgment by reading and analyzing news ✓ Develop reporting techniques, including interviewing and research. Evaluate sources. ✓ Write and edit copy in journalistic style, including hard news, editorials, features and reviews ✓ Learn and adhere to Associated Press (AP) style guidelines ✓ Learn and utilize editors’ marks effectively when copyediting ✓ Learn and utilize basic Adobe InDesign software for digital page layout ✓ Examine the basic legal rights and responsibilities of journalists ✓ Examine the history, as well as the future, of the journalism industry
Student Responsibilities/Classroom Rules 1. Watch/read the news!!!! We will be discussing breaking news stories throughout the year. 2. Be aware of and meet all deadlines. Journalism is a deadline-oriented profession; therefore it is imperative to learn to effectively work within deadlines. Work turned in late will be penalized 10% for each day late, up to a 50% reduction in grade. 3. ALL work should be typed, double spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman, and formatted according to AP guidelines 4. All work should include an MLA heading and headline at the top and the word count at the end of articles. 5. Work should be saved in the student’s shared Google Docs folder in the school provided Google Drive as well as printed out to hand in 6. Computers will be utilized daily for class work and assignments (or students may bring their own laptops.) Students are expected to neatly return laptops to the cart and plug in the charger. 7. Please be aware that your class may contain both Journalism I and II students. Therefore, not all students may be working on the same assignment. 8. This class is designed to allow enough time to complete all work during class periods or the school day. If you stay focused and on task, you should not have to take Journalism work home to complete. Also, you are welcome to stop by B1110 during blocks A1, B1, B3 or B4 to quietly borrow a computer and work on an assignment.
PLAIGARISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! Please do NOT give in to the temptation to plaigarize! Copying even one sentence without citing the original writer is considered plaigarism. Plaigarism will result in an automatic 0 for an assignment and an email sent home to parents.
