Early Release Wednesdays (PCT)

All elementary schools in our District participate in Professional Collaboration Time (PCT) on a weekly basis. Dismissal time will be 1:10 p.m. every Wednesday. This allows for much-needed collaboration time for our grade level teams. Class Rules

1. Respect yourself and others.

2. Raise your hand before speaking.

3. Listen and follow directions.

4. Always try to do your best.

5. Follow all safety rules.

6. Work quietly, be polite … and smile! Classroom Expectations

An online behavior system is utilized in my classroom. It is called “Class Dojo” (www.classdojo.com) and an invitation to join Miss Oatman’s Class accompanies this Parent Information Night packet. Class Dojo allows for immediate feedback (whether positive or negative) regarding your child’s behavior. Please register online as soon as possible in order to receive feedback about your child’s behavior. Also, please sign and return the portion of the invitation letting me know that you joined Class Dojo. You will receive notifications of your child’s behavior throughout the day via Class Dojo, so there will be no weekly behavior charts sent home.

If your child chooses not to follow our classroom rules (after given warnings about the behavior), I will enter his/her name on the Class Dojo website, and there will be a sound that each child will recognize. Class Dojo offers both immediate positive and negative feedback to parents who have registered for my class. If the child’s behavior is negative and persistent, then I will be sending a message through Class Dojo advising parents of the behavior and any consequences given.

I will continue to have a card pull system in the classroom in addition to Class Dojo. Green for “go” – that’s the color that children should strive for! Please keep in mind that there are usually several warnings prior to any card pull. I am hopeful that I will only be sending positive messages home through Class Dojo! Thank you for your help with our online behavior system.

Those who follow the rules, work nicely with others, and demonstrate good listening skills will receive points through Class Dojo as well. If a child receives 15 points, that student will be able to choose a prize from the class Treasure Box, or may choose another reward, such as lunch with the teacher and friends (Lunch Bunch), sitting at the teacher's desk for the day, or choosing a P.E. or art activity.

Positive reinforcement is the main focus in my classroom. Verbal praise is given ... ALWAYS ... and OFTEN!

I am looking forward to a great year! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year; I would be happy to schedule an appointment with you to address your concerns. My e-mail address is [email protected]. I also will create an e-mail distribution list with all parents to keep everyone informed of classroom happenings. You can also contact me by telephone at (951) 736-7737, ext. 83226.

Sincerely,

Miss Oatman Positive Classroom Rewards

Positive rewards and self-esteem go hand-in-hand. Students who behave appropriately will be positively rewarded in the classroom. The classroom is run on a positive rather than negative system of earnings.

How to earn a classroom reward:

Points through Class Dojo will be given as a reward for good behavior, such as listening and following directions, working carefully and completing assignments on time, helping others, etc. After a student receives at least 15 points, the student may choose an item from the Treasure Box, or to choose another reward, lunch with the teacher and friends (Lunch Bunch), sitting at the teacher's desk for the day, or choosing a P.E. or art activity, or sitting with a friend for the day. I also send notes home as rewards. These are sent "just because," for children who exhibit exemplary behavior in the classroom, or who work really hard at accomplishing a certain task.

Another positive reward is our "Principal’s Recess," which will happen each Friday afternoon as a reward to those students who turn their homework and class assignments in on time. Snacks and Lunch

The first recess of the day (9:45) is our snack recess. Please consider sending a healthful snack with your child each day as many children, especially first graders, do get very hungry before lunch. IMPORTANT: For the safety of your child, it is important that snacks and lunch NOT be shared due to possible allergy issues. Please reinforce this with your child. As you know, a good, nutritious lunch is an important part of your child's day. Corona-Norco Unified School District is committed to the health and wellness of our children. Please help us in this commitment by providing lunches and snacks that are nutritious. Our lunch break begins at 11:00 and ends at 11:45. School lunches are sold for $2.75 each. Parents can pay ahead by sending cash or check (made payable to Child Nutrition Services). Simply place the money in an envelope and mark it with your child's name, 6-digit identification number, grade, and teacher. A credit balance is established if your child does not use all of his/her meals in a month. Another option allows parents to prepay for student meals by using a credit or debit card. MySchoolBucks is a complete service that is designed to meet the parental need to check account balances and see their child's food purchases. This service also helps parents by eliminating worries about lost or stolen lunch money. Payments can be made at the parent's convenience, anytime of the day or night. Parents can access this service by going to www.myschoolbucks.com.

If your child is bringing a lunch, please write his/her first name as well as grade and track on the lunch box or bag. Also, I have observed the joy that children experience when they receive a special note from their parents in their lunch as well! Restrooms ...

We strongly encourage parents to work with their children on reminding them to use the restroom before school, during each recess, and after they have finished eating lunch. First grade teachers do allow children to leave their instructional setting to use the restroom when it is necessary. However, please keep in mind that a child leaving the instructional setting during a lesson disrupts learning for everyone. If your child uses the restroom frequently for medical reasons, please advise me of this very important information. Classroom Parties and Birthday Celebrations

To keep our classrooms clean and to minimize disruption of instruction time, our birthday celebrations consist of handing out treat bags at the end of the school day for children to then take home. Children love treat bags! Please call or send me an e-mail to confirm the number of students enrolled in our class.

We will have two classroom parties this school year. We will have a Winter Holiday party and an end-of-the year party. If you are interested in contributing towards these parties, or if you can offer assistance inside the classroom, please let me know. Your donations are always welcome and very much appreciated! I will forward reminders and information to you as the day of the event approaches. Citations ...

Receiving a citation can be a very emotional experience for a child. It is important that you take time to review the playground rules with your child. Please keep in mind that a citation is most likely to be issued after a child has been reminded of an inappropriate behavior and continues to display this inappropriate behavior. Citations (indoor and/or outdoor) can be issued for the following:

Name calling, arguing, put-down language, hitting, kicking Walkways: Running, loud talking, bouncing balls Not following classroom rules Not following playground rules Throwing rocks or other objects Not following lunch rules Not using playground equipment properly Playing in the Restrooms

Homework Policies

Homework is an assignment with purpose that is related to classroom learning, is an extension of classroom learning, and is completed outside of class time. Every Friday your child will take home the red plastic homework/communication folder with any flyers or letters for you to review. On Fridays I will post the homework assignment (the dates will be the next Monday through Friday) on my website (go to www.cnusd.k12.ca.us, go to Ronald Reagan Elementary, then go to “teacher sites.” Please print out the homework and return it to school the following Friday morning using the homework/communication folder. Homework is expected to be completed neatly and accurately, just as it would be expected to be done in class.

The homework packets will generally consist of your choice of a short reading selection for you to assess fluency, as well as assigned math mages from the math practice workbook. Please read at least 15 minutes nightly with your child. Also, your child will be expected to give weekly oral presentations following the topics and rubric that you can also find on my website.

Before turning in the homework WITH the homework folder, please check to see that your child includes his/her name on all homework so that proper credit can be given. A sticker will be placed on the cover page of your child’s homework folder showing that your child was given credit for the assignment. Late homework will be graded down, unless there are unforeseen circumstances, in which case a note is expected. REMEMBER ... homework is your child's responsibility, and you may guide and assist them when necessary; yet please help by making your child accountable for putting it in the folder/backpack to return on Friday morning. Grading Procedures

The grading in first grade is as follows:

O = Outstanding (Above the standard expectations)

S = Satisfactory (Grade level standard)

N = Needs improvement (Below grade level standard)

If necessary, a + or a – are also given with letter grades.

Categories listed on report cards include Reading (Phonemic Awareness, Word Recognition, and Comprehension), Written Language, Oral Language, Math, Science/Health, and Social Studies.

Work Expectations

Work is expected to be completed neatly and accurately. Part of your child's grade depends on the overall appearance and quality of their work. Good penmanship is always stressed. Any work unfinished in class will be sent home for homework and must be returned by the specified date for credit. Parent Volunteers

Parent volunteers are a very important part of our classroom community! Parent volunteers can help both in and out of the classroom. The greatest need for parent help is copying (such as homework packets), as well as tearing out pages from consumable workbooks, etc. A parent volunteer would especially be needed each Friday morning to collect homework, and assemble homework packets.

Please fill out your name and phone number as well as your child's name and list the days and times that you might be available. Again, your help is appreciated!! Thank you in advance!

In an effort to ensure the safety of our students and staff, only registered volunteers and those with an appointment will be allowed back to the classroom. It is important that you sign in at the front office and wear a nametag that identifies you as a parent volunteer. Classroom volunteers must fill out an application for the school year and will be placed on a schedule that will be kept at the front office. We request any parent wishing to meet with a teacher also make an appointment in advance so that our office will be notified of your meeting time. Also, any parent volunteer who is helping in the classroom must remain in the classroom for the time they are on campus. Parents can only be on the playground if certificated personnel (teacher) accompany them. Parent helpers and volunteers are very important to our classroom communities – thank you for your help in implementing our District policies and procedures. Ronald Reagan Elementary School
